Foul Play: Paid In Mississippi

After a five year investigation, SB Nation has put together a four part documentary series on the corruption in the NCAA, specifically revolving around Hugh Freeze's tenure at Ole Miss that ultimately ended in disgrace.

The series gets into depth about the elaborate systems used by major programs to funnel money to elite prospects to get them to sign with specific schools, how that winds up harming the players, and how the NCAA tries to have things both ways while taking no responsibility.

So, this all had repercussions felt to this day. After Houston Nutt chooses to not be the fall guy for Ole Miss, ultimately revealing Freeze's use of escorts and destroying his career, the NCAA instituted a new rule codifying the process that they used to allow several Freeze Ole Miss commits to transfer without penalty (normally, transferring players have to sit out a season.) This rule says that if a player can demonstrate that they are transferring to avoid a program that is engaged in behavior against NCAA rules, they will not be forced to lose a year.

This new rule was put to use this past week, where linebacker Santino Marchiol invoked it when transferring from Texas A&M to Arizona, accusing the Aggies of a wide range of violations, most notably a disregard for his health (Marchiol had suffered an ankle fracture as a freshman.) This has had particular resonance after the recent revelations in Maryland, where the Terps football staff led by coach DJ Durkin created a toxic atmosphere which lead to the death of Jordan McNair.

Sorry NCAA, you'll never be better than third. FIFA and the IOC will always be in a tie for "Most Corrupt" sports organization.

I'm watching these videos with the Youtube auto-generated captions on (hey, it's better than nothing) and I love the fact that, at least once, it mis-hears "N-C-double-A" as "incidental waste".

Wow. As a long time Spencer Hall and EDSBS fan, I never expected the offshoots of that to produce something this compelling.

Pay the players.

There's a point in the last video where the SB Nation team points out how little the amounts involved are. Lewis brought in maybe $20k,and used it for things like putting a roof over his family's heads, and buying a used car so he could actually travel.

And on the other side of things, we had the utter fiasco in Ohio today, where the OSU leadership spent twelve fucking hours deliberating on suspending Urban Meyer over his not notifying University leadership that one of his assistant coaches was a fucking abusive asshole. The reason for the day long deliberations? Meyer refused to accept punishment.

The NCAA needs to burn.

Ole Miss fan hear, PAWL.

F the NCAA.
Pay the players.
Let them sell their shoes.
Let the sell their autographs.
Let them make money off Youtube.

LSU pays its players. Bama pays its players. Georgia pays. Vanderbilt Pays. Ohio State pays. Everyone cheats. Its an open secret.
The only recourse should be to allow the players their own financial autonomy.

The NCAA positions itself on the moral high ground. Domestic assaults, rape, systemic violence, is all given a slap on the wrist.

Let a recruit stay on an assistant coaches couch for a night and that school loses its ability to play in a bowl game.

Just read about the racist NCAA investigation into Donte Moncrief's brother.

They are the literal definition of a Kangaroo court.

Great reporting from Steven Godfrey on this issue though. Real top notch stuff from him.

And now Freeze is blaming his inability to get hired in the NCAA on "the current climate" (read: the fact that people are taking his hypocrisy on sex and relationships seriously.)

That has to be the product of utter delusion.
