The new full trailer for the Suspiria remake has dropped... but what about this previously unknown actor, Lutz Ebersdorf, playing Dr Jozef Klemperer? Could there be more than meets the eyes here... or not? (previous)

Wait, they're trying to convince people that's not someone in old age make up? That would be a surprise to me since seeing it as someone in make up was thing that kept distracting me from the trailer when I first saw it.

They're just deploying an innovative marketing campaign for the film. Tilda Swinton got a lot of practice doing the whole make-up thing in 'Manifesto' too.

I'm excited though - the fact that they're keeping the vintage look and weird FX means they're actually aware of what made those Dario Argento films so cool in the first place.

Oh, the preview looks interesting enough and I liked Guadagnino's I am Love, so I'll probably see the movie at some point, but the make up thing is still sorta odd because for it to be a useful marketing idea it has to be noticed as fake so people will wonder about it, which then takes away much of the potential for it to be used as a reveal in the movie itself, if that was their plan.

Star Trek Discovery just did much the same thing, but there at least the make up did sufficiently hide the identity of the person under it, it was only in their less than through internet history creation that questions really started to be raised, something they might have noted in trying it here.

Of course it could be some multi-layered ruse to befuddle audiences by not being an attempt to hide an identity in the film or something of that sort, in which case, congrats to them for the idea, but the make up is still distracting.

In the shot of the missing poster, there was a very on-the-nose article title on the bulletin board: "Murder begins at the evil word."

It's this 1977 Der Spiegel piece, about whether one can have sympathy with terrorists (specifically, the Baader-Meinhof group, a few months before the 'German Autumn' of 1977). The wanted posters are also of the Baader-Meinhof Bande.

To be honest I had zero suspicions when I first watched the trailer. But I do tend to be take things at face value... on a rewatch, then yeah... especially the voice

I remember reading a Ebert review for an old film where he totally played along with a similar situation claiming a part was played by an actor who had only done stage work before.

I pretty much knew it was someone in old man makeup when I watched the trailer, but I don't think I would have ever pegged that it was Swinton specifically.

One day, someone is going to get the idea to remake The List of Adrian Messenger. It's an okay film with a huge gimmick: it features famous actors in supporting roles in heavy makeup. The make up (especially for the time) is pretty damn good, and a few of them actually look like other actors under heavy makeup, presumably just to fuck with the audience.

I kind of hope it's not Swinton in age makeup, because she's a wonderful actress, but her penchant for terrible prosthetics reaches Depp-level silliness much of the time.

Tilda Swinton got a lot of practice doing the whole make-up thing in 'Manifesto' too.

Wait, are you saying she was in disguise as Cate Blanchett in disguise?

hey @bettywhite it's @tilda here. I'm getting a lot of controversy over taking a role away from an actual agin' person, and i figured we could rap sister-to-sister about it...

Unrecognizable under old age makeup you say? Looks like the dormant Tilda Stardust Tumblr might have grist for one more post.

It's weird that old-age makeup doesn't seem to have gotten much better since Little Big Man (autoplay video).

Jeez- do they have to keep giving Stan Lee cameos in every Marvel property?

Are they bringing back Goblin? I regularly play this soundtrack to wake up my kids in the morning.

I saw the trailer a couple of days ago and sort of went "Oh, Tilda Swinton is in it?" but couldn't find her listed and forgot about it and now I read this so I'm permitting myself a minutes worth of smug before moving on.

I feel the world is ready to accept male actors, and there are many talented ones who would have jumped at the chance to play a man on screen.
