Tom Gran is an illustrator, animator, writer, and director who started 2018 with a little challenge to himself: "every day I add another character to a giant fight scene until it gets so giant I probably won't even be able to upload it to Twitter anymore."

I love scrolling down, seeing a character shoot a bullet or laserbeam or ghost and guessing where it's going to go and then seeing where it actually goes/what it does. Delightful and violent.

Here's the ThreadReader link, for ease of browsing. I absolutely love this, it's officially one of my favorite posts on metafilter.

Wow. I assume he planned the broad strokes of this in advance, because it is fascinating to watch it all come together.

I'm not sure how well thought-out this was, you'd think if he had sat down to lay it all out he would have come up with something more like a Where's Waldo picture where everyone is standing on the ground and depicted from an elevated viewpoint. It seems a lot more like he started out with a few folks and made the decision to show it side-on before realizing what that bought him into, then it's a series of "Well what the hell do I do now?" moments before settling on having lots and lots of elevated platforms.

So far my favorite is the birds, and the birds what have been transformed into humans.

Is there a name for this sort of massed vignette drawing? Where's Wally and the Usborne puzzle books I grew up with were like having thirty hours of drama, comedy and intrigue condensed onto a single page.
