Wenn du mich siehst, dann weine

Every day without rain in Los Angeles increases my urge to move back to my hometown, where I grew up in a house next to a river upstream from the water treatment plant. (The SoCal heat wave straight up killed our tomatoes and scorched our blood oranges.)

This is mournful and fearsome. I don't know how much modern food supplies are going to be affected in the region, given global distribution and all, but if a rock emerges from the depths bearing the legend wenn du mich siehst, dann weine, you better believe I am going zu weinen.

It reminds me of the ancient stone nilometers. They had to be consulted every year, and everything depended upon them.

In Japan there are carved sones in the forrest on the mountainsides that have years carved into them that indicate how high the tsunami waters came.

The first drought marked on the stone was in 1417.

In Japan...

Interesting. Likewise, in Rome you can see flood markers that show how high the Tiber rose (earliest dated 1277, though of course there were many more floods before anyone thought to mark them down).

Aqueduct, my friend.
It's a road that carries water.
You poor dry sod, it irrigates your fields.
