Aw, man! I miss those kinds of blue jays from the east coast, and I was just feeling nostalgic about them over the weekend. Thanks for sharing.

Awesome. I keep hoping to develop a relationship with a bird, but so far no luck. Maybe if I spent more time outside instead of lying on the couch reading MetaFilter it would—nah, probably won't work.

I love blue jays. They've always meant a lot to me and they're just beautiful, fun birds. I always try to befriend them and fail. Maybe I just need to try harder.

Fledgling-to-teenage birds are the best. I delayed leaving my driveway because there was a teenage cardinal trying to act all badass when he still hadn't quite mastered flying and I was just so entertained by watching him.

I like that blue jay birb.

I also want to see birb as an alternate spelling listed in the OED.

We once hand-reared a blackbird from just before fledging, after the rest of the nest was killed, and I remember that teenage attitude so well. Especially the 'I know I can get my own food, but I'm going to tilt my head and hold my wings just so until you give me a snack' gambit.

Also the Saturday afternoon when he flew over the wall to the garden centre next door and decided he couldn't fly back. He sat on their display of patio furniture raising a riot, until I walked round there. In front of a dozen or so customers, he sqwarked, flew to me and I walked out with him sitting on my head chirping away.

He fledged properly soon after that and joined his blackbird kin. We never knew quite where he went, although for several years afterwards a male blackbird nested in the garden who wasn't tame as such, but he was more bloshy than they usually are.
