2013 Reunion - "In 1996, a student film followed a group of punk-feminist eighth graders in Santa Monica called the 'dirty girls'. Uploaded to YouTube years later, it became an instant cult sensation." (via via; previously)

This seems like a vapor wave video in search of a score.

Awesome. I had some qualms when I watched the video on YouTube, because I wasn't sure if they (as adults) would be cool with something from when they were in 8th grade going viral—just the thought of that gives me the heebie-jeebies, good god no—but they seem to be happy with it. And it's particularly classy of them to not carry any hard feelings towards the people who were clearly being assholes to them (I just did a mental check, and nope, I've still got a bunch of people who I wouldn't piss on if they were actually on fire, so I can't say that I've reached that level of zen).

Highschool sucks, good on them for getting through it with such apparent aplomb and such a cohesive sense of self.

One to two years behind me. They were appreciated in the moment, with a bit of requisite snark, fwiw.

It should be noted that their style was in large part built on girls a few years ahead of them (one to two years ahead of me), hybridized with Courtney Love and Bikini Kill. They would assuredly agree.

Somehow I'd never seen the original video. Boy, did hearing the nasty things people said about them bring some uncomfortable flashbacks to mind. I'm two years younger and it's painful to remember how . . . hard it was to be weird back then, in a way that I don't think is quite true today. And I was really weird. (My sister made this video of me when I was sixteen, if you want to see how weird). I don't really mind the person I was, and I'm glad to see these women don't, either, but I sure am glad that the words of the people who teased me aren't enshrined in digital amber.
