"I can’t wait to play with my favourite capitalist overlord"

Over half a decade since the last full version, and the more recent mis-steps of the mobile version, at the end of a game-packed Nintendo Direct which included the teaser of Isabelle joining Super Smash Bros, Tom Nook appears to herald the announcement of Animal Crossing for the Switch in 2019. The Internet is happy. Questions, some previous life advice and post title.

The entire Nintendo Direct video, which has a lot of other forthcoming games in it, or jump straight to Mr Thomas Nook.

Finally! So many people thought they were going to make the announcement at E3.

Also, a remastered version of Katamari Damacy.

I might have to buy a Switch just for that and Untitled Goose Game.

This was disturbingly similar to me when it became clear it wasn't another bluff and was actually, finally, going to be a proper Switch game.

I just got a Switch and have been fighting off a lot of impulse purchases waiting for Metroid to be announced. Why no Metroid :(

fine I’ll buy a goddamn switch already

Away from Animal Crossing, I keep replaying the forthcoming Yoshi game trailer. Not my favorite character, but I keep looking at the background detail, the shadows, the movement, and seeing a load of new things every time I watch it.

It'll be added to Nintendo Switch Online's collection if NES titles shortly after launch!

That's what you meant, right, you wanted the original NES game, not a new Metroid title? ;)

Yeeeeeeeessss! My son has been advocating that I hold off on Switch aquisition and just use his on college vacations. Now I have a purchase target date!

Metroid Prime 4 is coming, but Nintendo doesn't really have a Metroid team the way they have teams for Mario, Zelda and Animal Crossing.

The kids have played Arms and have been begging for a Switch. Have told them that I actually already own a switch already but I only play it on the bus and the only game I own for it is WWII Tank Facts Spreadsheet and they can’t see it.

This may the thing that gets me to relent and actually buy one though.

Nintendo's bait-and-switch with Isabella right at the end was a masterpiece.

The channel where we were all watching was a roller coaster of emotion during that segment.

Yoshi's Wooly World was great and I'm looking forward to the new one. It was one of the few games my wife and I enjoyed playing co-op (couch co-op games are rare these days, good ones even more so). That one also had some amazing little details, visually they are quite fun.

Also, the excellent New Super Mario Brothers U is seeing a release on Switch in January. A must-have if you skipped the Wii U like everyone else.

Tom Nook's loans are interest-free.

Is he often a bit too eager to land you in that loan? Maybe. But he sells you a house on an interest-free loan, and for that reason I will never bear to see his name maligned.

'S all.

God it's weird to be into year 2 of a Nintendo console and still see lots of announcements. Like, sure Smash Bros and Animal Crossing but that's usually all that's coming out. Meanwhile they're going to try and stream Assassin's Creed on the Switch because they can't downgrade it, there's a bunch of Final Fantasy games coming out - a bunch of third-party games (I mean, a lot of ports, but at least they're ports of stuff that is welcome and not the off-cuts from last year) at the same time as Nintendo is on the biggest hot streak of its existence.

Bodes well for Animal Crossing, I guess.

Still got fingers crossed for an XCOM port.

YES. I literally just ordered a refurb Switch from Nintendo today. The announcements of Diablo III and Slay The Spire, and a bunch of people constantly telling me how great Hyper Light Drifter and Dead Cells are, pulled me in. But now I feel super extra justified.

Lotta good stuff, animal crossing not being the least of these. It was only when telling someone out loud about my excitement at seeing the PS1/PS2 final fantasies wrapped up in a trilogy that the definition of trilogy as “7, 9, 10 and 10 part two” sounded weird.

For cool factor, how about those classic NES controllers that slide into the Switch controller docks?

I cannot wait for Untitled Goose Game. And Katamari. I am really, really not a gamer anymore, but I dig the Switch.

I'm slightly frightened at the prospect of a new Animal Crossing on the switch. I still remember dark days of playing the turnip market, a dedicated room stacked high with them, text files tracking the daily prices, and the one time I messed up while transferring inventory and my dude happily chowed down on about a hundred grand worth of tuber. Surrounding my brother's house three layers deep with pitfall seeds was fun though.

Also that anime OP style Splatoon trailer was stylin'.

but I dig the Switch.

It really is fun powerhouse of portable entertainment. For me, this is the main appeal. It is getting all of the Indie-game love that the Vita should have received and the main line games we all love from Nintendo as well, your Zelda, Mario, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, and of course Animal Crossing.

I've been cheating on my PC for most of the last year because curling up in my favourite chair or in bed with my handheld is what I love most about gaming. I've always been more drawn to the portable Nintendo systems (Gameboy, 3DS).

I'm a fan of this system and I also love that we're at a place of technology/graphics that allows for games like Skyrim and DOOM to run on this device. They made be scaled down but it's not something that is preventing people from enjoying the game. The portability of having these games that might otherwise run better on a PC is worth the trade-off.

It's a brilliant system.

Valkyrie Chronicles (original) plus 4 are both coming out very soon. They're basically XCOM but with anime/WWII skin on top and they're lots of fun. Also, Into the Breach is XCOM with mechs with chess with FTL retro aesthetics. So there's lots of tactical fun that awaits you until XCOM does officially come out and I suspect it will. I wouldn't be surprised if XCOM2 happens, I think the Switch hardware could handle it.
