I thought the primary palette of West Side Story was employed with great effect.

Aw, no mention of Michel Gondry in the practical effects video.

Did they describe Wes Anderson as "a little bit hipster" unironically or was that some form of post-to-the-nth-power irony that sailed over my head?

One of my favorite color things in a movie is in Peter Greenaway's Belly of an Architect, in which he totally deprives you of blue without being obvious about it. When he finally uses the color it's kind of mind-blowing. Also, Brian Dennehey in a different kind of role.

What?? Come on. No matter how precious you get in the rest of the list, the Best Use of Color in a movie is THE WIZARD OF OZ. Kansas to Oz. Nuff said.

If you get a chance to see Nathaniel Dorsky's films made in Golden Gate Park screened, and you like colors, you should take that chance without hesitation.

The subtle sepia tint (created with digital color grading) in O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000) enhanced the film's old-timey mood nicely.

Although OBWAT? isn't listed, clickable frame-by-frame color palettes of many other films are at The Colors of Motion.

Fleming totally ripped off Tarkovsky's Stalker.

The best scenes of all time list is not bad but it got the best comedy scene wrong.

The best comedy scene in history is the golf course air horn scene from the first Jackass movie.

If you're talking about colour in films and Pitch Black isn't in the list, you're not trying very hard.

I think that Cinefix's videos are actually like master classes in theory that are poorly titled. This isn't "the top ten best uses of 'color' in film", it's more like "Ten different ways directors work with color and our favorite example of each specific technique". I think that's why people go into it expecting "Wizard of Oz" mentioned; that is indeed a use of color, but it isn't a god example of "the monochromatic pallette" or such.

But their videos are like perfect for me, so yay.

I find the hyperbolic titles so annoying that I can't really get past them. I mean it's an okay list of mostly recent film that make good use of color but the "of all time" just makes it seem so shallow.

Well, shit. Just when I thought this is what I was doing all night. Now it's THIS?

The color video was ok but a lot of these betray a certain white male film student bias. War movies, westerns, Kubrick, lots of golden-age DeNiro and Pacino, Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, Bergman, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that stuff, but there's kind of a sameness to a lot of the choices.

I think the choices were helped a lot by which movies Cinefix could find info to, um, borrow for his video. A lot of the Oh Brother Where Art Thou stuff, for example, was used in this video from 2013 and may have been on some commentary track or elsewhere first for all I know.

The "rankings" like his love of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, as can be seen across a number of the videos, is his own choice, more or less, and does tend towards seeming a bit film schoolish in some limiting ways.

The idea of breaking down color use into different methods isn't bad, framing it as "rankings" is annoying as hell and the same idea doesn't necessarily carry over into the other videos as well. The "Most Emotional Scenes" one is kinda ridiculous other than as a personal construct. It's way too simplistic, not really adequate conceptually, but does give another chance to mention Phillip Seymour Hoffman who, you may notice, he really likes.

The sets and practical effects choices are harmless enough, giving some reasonably useful basics on the ideas and the "rankings" aren't really important for something of that sort anyway.

The Best Scenes list is way too simplistic, but as there'd be no hope of trying to summarize the possibilities of scene use in one video or even give full explanation for a single scene's importance in the time allowed if it gets people thinking about the idea, I guess it's a starting point.

The rest seems mostly designed to draw viewers and give some chance to go on about some favorite thing of Cinefix's, which is what it is in the Youtube ecosystem.

If you are interested in the use of color in movies, this is a nice summary that goes a bit more in depth and doesn't fuss with "rankings" to do so.
