Well duh? What do they think the various orbiters around the Moon have been doing since 1966? There's no material (ha!) difference between a natural moon and an artificial one.
(Though specifically the Earth's Moon is hard to orbit permanently as the mascons beneath its surface have a nasty tendency to warp orbits so that anything occupying them, uh, lithobrakes after a while. But I recall that a Russian did find a niche of highly inclined orbits that would stay stable long-term.)

I will only accept this if it's pronounced as if George St Geelund or Gil Faizon from Oh Hello! are talking about one as it was a guest on Too Much Tuna. "munMoon"

I've watched enough QI to know that this answer will change between now and Series T, and someone's eating a klaxon for it.

Someday, the maybe the moonmoons will have moons of their own, and then the earth will be a great-grandplanet.

I don't know if we should trust the IAU to come up with a good name for moons of moons since they totally botched the whole planet thing. "Let's come up with a weird, arbitrary criterion for a planet that fails to account for free planets not in orbit around any star or large planets in orbital resonance just so we don't have too damn many of them."
Good thing the IAU isn't in charge of chemistry. They would've tried to figure out a way to reduce the periodic table of elements back down to four. There would've been a stupid rule like "only stable nuclei count."

So it's moons all the way down? (Or out/up/around/insert your favorite preposition here)

Some sort of cosmic coincidence had me wondering a couple of weeks ago whether large moons could have stable moons of their own, or would the gravity of their planets make the mechanics not work.
I’m still not clear on this.

Yes, Luna -- there in the tags! Our moon, Luna, could have a moon.
Some people call their dog the name pronounced: dee-oh-gee, [Doge?] and that gets close to the feeling I have when so, so many people call our moon, Moon. I guess we live on Planet, too. It just hasn't reached critical mass as a name. Though, Water - Ocean - Sea seems more appropriate than Earth, we still at least recognize it with that *name* rather than its category of heavenly body.

For once, can't we just name something "That which must not be named"?

There was also a reddit thread about this recently, apparently people have moonmoons on the brain (moonmoonbrain, if you will). Moomins may also be involved.
