Jingle Rock, Jingle Rock, Bell Bell Bell

As the Thanksgiving parade plays in the background tomorrow, many families like mine will pull out the Christmas tunes. And so, Metafilter reminds you to include, on its the 14th (!) anniversary, the Mefi's Own PinkStainlessTail/Lentrohamsanin holiday classic "Jingle Rock Bell". (Lyrics, music video, and mefite karaoke performance.) For those who need a little more musical chaos in their life, try some of Mefi's Own cortex's Endless Jingling.

(Ever see "Sleepless in Seattle"'s Annie twist the radio knob off ... and wonder what "Jingle Bells" really does sound like backwards? You can't find it by the New Jersey Cape Mayettes, but you can find it here.)

The video is wonderful! I run it in the background on my computer (at my good workplace.....where they let (tolerate) me do such things.)

For me, this song is the reason for the season. One of my favorite parts of Christmas. It brings me endless joy. Thanks, Lentrohamsanin!

I also love Jingle Rock Bell to an unreasonable degree, so any post reminding people it exists is a good post (rock).

I'm a big fan of Endless Jingling.. although I think it could use some tweaks, the concept is strong and leads to some great lyrics..

For example, I just got one that was "grandma got run over by a/ mother and child, mother and child"

Some people are gonna need some Jingle Rock Bell to get through Thanksgiving this year.

*pulls up chair, thanksgiving edition*
“Get off my lawn.”

Thank you for saying that. None of this Christmas in November bullshit.

Ok, sorry. That was too snarky maybe. People can enjoy Christmas/Holiday music, but ugh. It's just ugh for me personally, not a fan. Do you fam.

I am livid every November when Xmas Music Everywhere season begins. That said, Jingle Rock Bell and this sublime bedlam get me through it every year.

Thank you for saying that. None of this Christmas in November bullshit.

Au contraire!

"Jingle Bells" is a Thanksgiving song, and so are--by extension-- Jingle Bell Rock and Jingle Rock Bell. This is the right time to rock jingle bell the night away.

As I see we're getting a jump on the Christmas song season, please allow me to submit for your consideration a new holiday classic, Natalie Walker's "All I Want For Christmas Is You But Just The Alto 2 Part From When My High School Chorus Sang It" (Twitter video) (previously on MeFi)

Oh God, Jingle Rock Bell is the worst, longest-running earworm/brainworm collection of notes and words ever committed to ones and zeros and transmitted far and wide and it's been in my head since 2004.

Fuck you, Metafilter.

I love you all so much.

Pretty soon, the malls will be playing Jingle Rock Bell before Labor Day!

In previous years, I'd have been on the "It's too early for Christmas music!" team.

In 2018 though, the world feels like a raging dumpster fire.

So if busting out the Christmas tunes early brings you some joy, feel free to do so whenever the hell you please.

The karaoke file now lives here, today and for all time. As before, you'll need to supply your own copy of Lenny Dee's "Jingle Bell Rock" (off the Happy Holi-dee album) to properly sing along.

Let's say my son wanted to set up a standing internet station for the holiday season, that did nothing but run Jingle Rock Bell, but otherwise resembled a normal holiday-themed internet streaming station. Would I need the permission of the karaoke track people, or just the fine human who wrote and sang this glorious derivative work?

Now I just need to find that edit of “Wonderful Christmastime” that repeats the refrain a hundred times

A hundred times? Pshaw. How about (approximately) 7,914 times?

Also I updated the Endless Jingling code slightly thanks to a tip from fellow MeFite Sibrax, so now it does finally work on iphones. You have to tap once to get the audio to start.

on its the 14th (!) anniversary

My mental reaction to song ages is usually like "holy shit there are teenagers who were conceived to this," but if you guys are into that I don't want to know about it

hahah. I knew who that karaoke was going to be before I even clicked on it.

If this is my only legacy, I'm okay with that.

Speaking of hot boys singing this song at karaoke*, I feel like any celebration of Jingle Rock Bell also needs to re-mention the song's appearance (via karaoke even!) in the delightful m/m romance novel Playing with Fire (as originally mentioned in this thread).

* Yes I know what I did there.

An old friend of mine now works regularly directing holiday films for places like the Hallmark Channel. I brought this to her attention and she messaged back immediately that she loves this.

"I'm gonna get this in a movie if it kills me," she promises.
