Disney Has a Horrifying New Method to Create Video Game Teeth [YouTube] “The ideal teeth appearance depends on the social and cultural context of the subject, as well as on their age since teeth appearance changes over time,” Disney researchers said in a paper titled Appearance Capture and Modeling of Human Teeth [.pdf]. “We present a system specifically designed for capturing the optical properties of live human teeth such that they can be realistically re-rendered in computer graphics. To capture the beauty of both the teeth and the oral cavity, Disney researchers needed their volunteer to remain still while a barrage of 54 different lights blasted at his face for 10-15 second intervals while a camera snapped pictures.” [via: Motherboard]

Disney's Mathematical model of how beauty correlates with virtue would be a fascinating leak.

I had no idea they were ever trying for dental realism.

If I agree not to complain about the quality of the teeth when they don't do this, can we skip the loot boxes and microtransactions?

But from the disordered chamber of my brain, had not, alas! departed, and would not be driven away, the white and ghastly spectrum of the teeth. Not a speck on their surface --not a shade on their enamel --not an indenture in their edges --but what that period of her smile had sufficed to brand in upon my memory. I saw them now even more unequivocally than I beheld them then. The teeth! --the teeth! --they were here, and there, and everywhere, and visibly and palpably before me; long, narrow, and excessively white, with the pale lips writhing about them, as in the very moment of their first terrible development. Then came the full fury of my monomania, and I struggled in vain against its strange and irresistible influence. In the multiplied objects of the external world I had no thoughts but for the teeth. For these I longed with a phrenzied desire. All other matters and all different interests became absorbed in their single contemplation. They --they alone were present to the mental eye, and they, in their sole individuality, became the essence of my mental life.

I work with someone who pioneered the use of this tech to capture image-based reflectance/transmission characteristics for human skin under varying lighting conditions, which is still kinda creepy (but less creepy than this). We just had a good chuckle about how the rig must be set up, and then I looked at the article, and, yup! Light stage... for your TEETH! I’m sort of surprised they’re not doing more with the lighting rig. Looks like the standard setup, except the subject is more immobilized than usual.

I know enough about image and performance capture to know that "our pipeline performs this process semi-automatically" probably actually means "If you look closely on the credits for Avengers 4 you'll see around 50 "dental vfx artists" who've been stuck wrangling teeth reflectance datasets for 2 years hoping they can move up to a more satisfying job next time, like working in the 2nd Downey Jr. Misplaced Beard Hair Compositing Unit

So I see it also tries to figure out the shape of the tooth roots, which I wouldn't have thought is necessary if you're just rendering the visible part of the tooth. But maybe it does help in extrapolating the backs of teeth that might not have been photographed directly.

The shape of the root affects the contour of the gums.

And I see chortly beat me to nominating Berenice as the next Disney Princess.
