Just the antidote I needed for that disappointing Hellboy trailer. Now this looks like fun.

This hasn't gone over great everywhere, some folks think it's off tone, but I liked all the MIB movies and think this looks fun.

Also, while I prefer contained, focused stories to blockbuster franchises, we're well past that line already, so I think the world is ready for a Ghostbusters crossover. I want Deputy Agent Holtzmann.

I have seen the argument that the trailer is good-not-great but who cares because the cast and the whole movie will probably be better, and I will entertain the notion that it leans too heavy into reexplaining the MIB mythos and all that.

But also did you see the eye-action between the two Thompsons in the exchange about the suit? THAT'S GREATNESS.

(also I think it's totally fine to explain the premise to an audience when the original movie came out 20 years ago...people gotta realize they are getting old)

Looks like fun, especially Tessa Thompson - but do we have to keep redoing movies over and over again? Surely there are some new ideas for blockbusters that don't eat the past?

MIB 1 set the tone, and I really enjoyed the MIB animated series. The sequels were OK, I guess, but this looks like just as much fun as the first one. They have my money on opening day.

Wasn't there already a trailer for another R.I.P.D. spin-off on the front page yesterday?
posted by Apocryphon at 2:48 PM on December 20, 2018 [1 favorite]

Weirdly F. Gary Gray also directed Be Cool, another sequel to a Barry Sonnenfeld film. I've never seen that one but I've heard it was pretty bad. On the other hand most of Sonnenfeld's work since the original MIB has been pretty dire too.

This looks like it could be OK just because of the lead actors, the rest of it looks like generic action movie stuff.

M.I.B.2, if not great, at least attempted a sort of "Saturday Matinée serial" feel that I enjoyed, possibly because I saw it at a lazy Saturday Matinée.

MIB movies have generally been fun. This probably will be, too, but I'm honestly a bit surprised how boring the trailer is.

It's boring because they insist on some pretty boy as co lead rather than having Thompson and Thompson save the universe and flirt with each other.

Damnit MartinWisse that’s the Movie I REALLY want to see now. DAMN IT. And it would have a plot that’s a thin allegory about toxic patriarchy and they wind up empowering the alien underclasses to revolt and set up GAY SPACE COMMUNISM.

Pout. I’ll watch what’s provided but I’ll be dreaming of Something more.

No, it's a prequel to Taken - he did say he had a very particular set of skills.

Hey now, I like a pretty boy as co-lead, thank-you-very-much.  Besides, anything that helps any of the Avengers gang push their way out of the acting straitjacket the movies build around them is good in my eyes; I'm sure the likely typecasting of Hemsworth and Evans has them both a bit worried for their future prospects.  Sure they're all fabulously wealthy now, but still, franchises like the Avengers have a nasty habit of complicating career arcs and I have no ill wills towards either of them besides a vague jealousy of what I could do with their sort of fuck-you money.

Putting him in a sharp suit with a non-Thor haircut is a smart move, even if the premise doesn't push him that far away from the Marvel movies.  At least between this, Ghostbusters, and the most recent Thor, he's getting a chance to show off his comedic timing.  Plus, his and Tessa Thompson's chemistry was great in Ragnarok.   I'm happy to see them partner again.

Given that the MIB as an organization already pretty much had the whole Earth as their jurisdiction, shouldn't it basically be assumed that they've been "international" ever since before the Smith/Jones days?

Chris Hemsworth was, unexpectedly, my favourite thing about the Ghostbusters remake. I wish they'd make a full-length movie about his character just blundering through life like Mr. Bean.

Well, yes, but the prior movies were restricted in scope to mostly New York City and maybe a tiny bit of the northeastern US immediately surrounding New York City. "International" in the title just tells us that this movie is going to have more globe-trotting in it instead of being a story about NYC as an immigrant melting pot.

My kid is a big fan of Odd Squad, which is basically Square One Television's "MathNet" reimagined as a maths-themed version of Men In Black populated entirely by children and yes it kicks ass.

I wonder if she's ready for MIB yet.

I've never understood how they do trailers like this with all kinds of cut scenes from the movie...implying to me it's done...and then it's a coming in 6 or 8 months? What's with the big delays?
posted by CrowGoat at 5:48 PM on December 20, 2018

What’s with the big delays?

Not *all* the effects are done, the audio is still coming in, marketing needs to be geared up, Hemsworth’s press availability, and general jockeying for release dates vs. production schedule realities.

At trivia tonight, one of the questions was about the highest grossing movie of 2018 that was a truly original screenplay that was not based on pre-existing IP -- sequel, prequel, remake, book, true story. You have to go surprisingly far down the list to find one. I don't think sequels and remakes are going anywhere any time soon.

It might be #12 Operation Red Sea. (Which is actually on Netflix currently)

But if they are counting only domestic, then it might be #12 A Quiet Place.

You know, I'm not sure the host actually said what the answer was, since it was in one of the rounds that was submitted on paper, but we're pretty sure it was The Quiet Place since generally the league means domestic box office when it asks about box office.
