DiscT@2: This revolutionary Laser Labeling System allows graphics and text to be burnt onto CD-R disc, eliminating the need for labels. Customers can put graphics, such as signatures, logos, memorandums, and photo images onto CD-R's unused area after data writing.

The Yamaha product linked on this page has got Mt. Ranier support (for true drag-and-drop CD rewriting,) 44x CD-R burning and 24x CD-RW rewriting.

These things keep getting faster and faster, ultimately there's gotta be an upper limit. (I'm guessing that's why manufacturers are looking for new features such as DiscT@2 to entice upgrades.)

The upper limit will probably turn into DVD burning, at some point. And technology consistently proves that we can never accurately predict where the upper limit is.

With that said, doesn't this post belong somewhere else? I think this is the first MeFi link I've seen heading straight for Product Information.

Uh, it already has. I think Fofer was referring to an upper speed limit, assuming that speed increases drive upgrade sales.

The tech is kinda neat, although I doubt I'd make much use of it. Also, "DiscT@2" has got to be the worst name I've seen in a long time. I had to read the press release before it made sense.

So, if you didn't put any data on the CD, you could use the entire thing as a label?!!!

wow. how neat

and why should i be excited by this?

Because now you can add useless comments to MetaFilter AND your CDRWs. One look at my desk full of unidentifable CDs, and you'll understand the need. Off to go find that missing Sharpie...

I never in a billion years would have guessed "T@2" is supposed to be pronounced "tattoo."

I wonder if the DiscT@2 works on colored CDR media, such as black?

How did you figure it out, kindall? I was reading it "tea at two" and trying to figure out a connection to coasters.

Maybe someone will figure out how to use this to clone the holographic labeling on Microsoft OS CDs.

Mars: It's in the press release.
