We had a dog, a mocap studio, and some spare time.

I've heard of video game companies trying to use non-union performers, but this is ridiculous. Remedy Entertainment (the Finnish video game studio best known for the Max Payne and Alan Wake series) went viral when they posted a picture on twitter of their latest motion-capture performer: a black Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Uuno. Come for the cute dog pictures and videos, stay for the insights into the ways modern game studios use live motion capture in animating characters.

There is no way mocap of that ball of joy could capture the grace and elegance of my elegant beasts

"I have no idea how these people got their dogs wedged into mocap suits, or why."

Naturally they used a dog. They knew if they tried it with a cat, they'd immediately organize, file a grievance about the working conditions, then go on strike.

(But really this is great. And put me down as one of those people who finds it scandalous they didn't mocap the tail-wag.)

Back when Call of Duty: Ghosts did mocap of a dog to play Riley in the game, he was outfitted with a whole custom suit that also captured tail motion. I think the largest animal to be mocapped is a horse for Red Dead Redemption 2.

The toughest part about working with animal actors in the mocap studio is getting them to T-pose to calibrate the sensors.

I hadn't thought about it in those terms before, but yes, "agrieved work stoppage" is the default state of my cat.
