How do these people get their cats wedged in imaged non-being?

Also missed opportunity for the domain icanhasexistenz.com.

Let us all be grateful those cats do not exist.

A side project This Person Does Not Exist, for which this post might be a double.

Significantly, aggressively worse at generating realistic cats than the human equivalent is at generating people, which is a fact I find comforting for some reason.

The person version you are referring to (I think) generates only head shots. If you had a training set of cat head shots, this one would do much better.

I literally just 'awww'ed at an artificial cat, which is upsetting.

Ai weirdness commentary on this from last week:
In many ways, generating cats is more of a challenge than generating human faces, since cats can be in so many different poses. It has an easier time generating texture than figuring out where all the legs and tails go.
Also, Grumpy Cat and probably Lil' Bub are disproportionately represented.

This Person Does Not Exist will be wonderful for people building sockpuppet avatars. No more needing to steal a real person's face that can be reverse-image-searched- just grab one of those.

At first I got nothing but cute cats and was thinking "I'm not seeing what's frightening. Some of these are adorable." and then I got a Cthulhoid mushroom cat from out of the dark recesses of my mind. I understand now.

Mixed feelings. On the one hand, that's a pretty freaky looking cat. On the other, it's clearly defending the home against invasion by an alien life form, which is always handy in a pet.

Can anyone view the page’s source? I can’t, and I have hypotheses but no certainty about why.
posted by Going To Maine at 3:53 PM on February 20, 2019

The page is just serving a JPEG, there's no HTML source.
posted by BungaDunga at 4:10 PM on February 20, 2019 [2 favorites]

But it seems like the image should have a name, or some other way to call it up?

The AI is immune to the mind warping fields that cats use to control us... it is showing us their true appearances!

The browser looks at the path to try and name the file if you download it. You can also, I think, set HTTP headers to suggest a filename. But this appears to have neither and mobile Chrome just calls it "download.jpeg".
posted by BungaDunga at 5:17 PM on February 20, 2019

Ordinarily you'd redirect to a path that would give a file a name at least temporarily but this site is definitely trying to be as minimalist as possible and just serving a single image and letting your browser deal with it. Without a path or any info in the HTTP header (other than a header saying that it's a JPEG) the browser just has the contents of the file, with no name attached.

Unlike the faces thing, this time I understand why people are reacting with surprise. I wonder if it would be less strange if they only used tightly cropped cat faces as input.

It's been posted before, but I just discovered edges2cats, which sort of an interactive version of the same. (But, with a very different internal structure.)

I started to freeform names of these kittos while I was refreshing this and came up with Scrimmage, Houlsouth, Perrens and Migator. This might be a great technique for the next time I've run out of fantasy names.
