God Of War's Art Director Has Been Drawing Up Realistic Smash Bros. Ultimate Characters [Instagram][@rafagrassetti] “Raf Grassetti, Art Director at Sony Santa Monica (the studio behind God of War), has been showing off his passion for Smash Ultimate's giant roster of characters by creating his very own art pieces. Under the name 'Smash Remastered', this collection shows the Nintendo favourites in a new, ultra-realistic light and - as you might expect from one of the artistic talents behind one of last year's most beautiful games - they're pretty incredible.” [via: Nintendo Life]

I love all of these, except this one, fuck this one in particular.

No.

For the past half a year, every time I go to the movie theater, I have to see this monstrosity.

Mr. Grassetti has excellent rendering skills, but some things are not meant to be realized on this plane of reality.

I think these are not good and reflect a particularly boring approach to character design. It’s like the fan art equivalent of rap lyrics rendered into Shakespearean English or something.

Can someone explain this one too me? He's already got a Samus (at first I thought this was his remix of Samus and was both impressed and annoyed), so what's with the Giger variant?

Star Fox is excellent.

Peach is the most interesting one, I think, as it is both different from the original and decidedly not grotesque.

Sincerely impressed by the size of this Pikachu.

I think the main problem with these is they aren't doing anything particularly interesting with the characters, especially the humans. Kirby looks like Kirby, but with a few creases and folds that help depict his jiggly body. Peach looks like a human cosplaying as Peach. Link looks like a human cosplaying as Link. Samus looks like a DLC Samus skin you'd download for some realistic space shooter. Donkey Kong looks like a gorilla. Yoshi is at least different, an abomination, but different.

Cartoon characters like Mario and Peach and so on are symbols, caricatures that represent something more than just a guy in overalls and a mustache. It sort of reminds me of the "Realistic Simpsons Characters!" that were just realistic faces stretched and contorted to the dimensions of a Simpsons character. Homer doesn't look the way he does because his head is hideously malformed, he looks that way because he represents a mediocre white boomer dad archetype. So don't draw "Realistic Homer," draw what Homer Simpson means to you. Draw what Princess Peach means to you, and if that means "Woman dressed up like Princess Peach" then, well...

(Also, Hactar, that's "Dark Samus" who is an evil copy of Samus from Metroid Prime 3. Why does she get to be in Smash Brothers? I dunno, ask Dark Pit.)

That Sonic reminds me that Sonic porn is a large internet subcultere that exists and now I feel bad.

Passed up a perfect opportunity to use "ReSMASHtered."

Short answer is, The Big Bad at the end of the first Metroid Prime game ripped off the suit Samus was wearing and adapted to it the suit, basically becoming a dark clone of Samus herself. The creature then proceeded to terrorize Samus for the next 2 games.

(The Metroid Prime series is possibly some of the most fantastic imagery and trilogy ever made. Hands down one the most beautiful games I've ever played. if you've never played it, it is well worth it, and there's rumor that it will be ported the switch or otherwise remade soon)

Agreed these are skillful but bloodless

Yoshi is the only one that moves the spirit in me

These are great. I find them kinda creepy, but not in the normal 'grotesquely realistic cartoon' creepy way. Really, they all just look like real characters, whether they're human or not. It's disquieting to see iconic characters made un-iconic, fleshed out. They're beautiful and charismatic and all, but they look like people I don't know yet, rather than characters I've been familiar with since I was 5.

The maquettes further down the index page are pretty incredible.

I like this because despite the very real deficiencies that Mr. Encyclopedia articulates very well, Link still looks ambiguously feminine which is literally all I'm asking for.

I’m super unhappy that Nintendo didn’t give me Piranaha Plant despite the fact that I bought a physical copy far before the deadline and did the steps recommended on their website with a month to spare regarding registering said physical copy. Oddly enough this soured Smash for me in a way that’s hard to justify or explain further but there it is. Sorry, just needed to vent. Cool art though.

That Bowser is cool as hell. Nintendo will never use it (and I kind of agree with them there) but it still looks great.

Roland, did you contact Nintendo support? They have a procedure for helping people who registered but didn’t get a code.

Donkey Kong looks downright avuncular.

No. But thanks for the concern.

To be honest, I'm pretty nonplussed at this point. And I'm not going to say I don't have time to, because well I'm commenting here and *do* have time for things like that, do so but my time is also in short supply with 2 kids and basically 2 jobs and 2 dogs and blah blah blah. First world problems all but dealing with tech support for a Smash Brothers avatar/playable character with god knows how much time/effort it would take for an non-certain result is pretty damn low on my list.

I dunno, I just expected better and this seems really, really silly.

Also, I just looked at his Instagram, and this rendering of Nova is great--it combines the comic character's latest look with the MCU version of the Nova uniform--and just makes me wish that the MCU would bring in the superhero version already.

Oh man I saw the Nova one on his Insta and didn't open it thinking it was just taking liberties with Captain Falcon.

Super agree about the weird/plainness of most of these. I think K Rool looks awesome, though, when I usually hate looking at him
