The estate of Prince Rogers Nelson, aka Prince, aka The Artist Formerly Known As Prince, aka [hollow circle above downward arrow crossed with a curlicued horn-shaped symbol and then a short bar] has collaborated with GIPHY to produce an official archive of GIFs drawn from (nearly) all his music videos.

On Twitter, Danny Chang of GIPHY confirmed that the impetus for the idea came from tech blogger, entrepreneur and Prince mega-fan Anil Dash, who had previously offered to produce them himself.

This feels cool and relevant in a way I wouldn't expect from any, uhh, estate.

whatever you do, don't try to load all the GIFs at once.... I kept scrolling for ~5 minutes and it's **endless** -- my browser started to sputter like I was reading a US Politics mega-thread! (it's glorious!) PS: A+ for the post title, PlutoGangsta.

Major regrets that Metafilter does not let us post images in threads.

This is supposed to be all about Prince, but if I had to tag myself...

This is way better than Peter Cushing's estate. Some gifs of extant work is a great way to give new life to old art. Meanwhile, Disney used CG to puppet Peter Cushing's corpse for their annual artless franchise milking.

This is great! Current work mood.

I'm sure there's angles I'm not considering, but strictly from my perspective as a huge fan, I agree that his estate seems to be doing a good job of curating his legacy so far. Between this, the much larger selection of music videos on YouTube, the later-career material appearing on streaming services (with a decent compilation companion album), and the gorgeous Piano & a Microphone bootleg, I've been happy. Would be happier if he was still with us, but what can you do. It is hard to shake the feeling that Prince probably wouldn't have let most of this slide during his lifetime, though.

Later material getting vinyl releases too! Musicology on vinyl. 3121! Planet Earth!

Totally unexpected, but I actually own all three of these on CD.... and these are tempting.
