Carolee Schneemann, Avant-Garde Artist & Feminist has passed
March 7, 2019 9:17 AM   Subscribe

Painter, performance artist, filmmaker, feminist, major figure of the avant-garde.

She was a founding member of the Judson Group and helped define modern performance art. Most well known for her performance pieces that explored gender and sexuality like Meat Joy, which had dancers perform an erotic rite with raw meat and Interior Scroll in which she read from a scroll that she pulled from her vagina.

But she was a prolific painter. She created many films. Was a lover of cats. She continued to push her limits well into her 70s.

Via Linda Stupart on Twitter: When people talk about possibly her most famous work, interior scroll, they never talk about the text *written* on and *read* off the scroll. Here it is.

Oh, I love her work. I wrote about masculinity and performance art for my undergraduate dissertation and touched on her piece with Robert Morris, "Site." She is really fascinating and has had a long influence.

Her work is absolutely indelible. My heart broke last night when I saw the news pop up on my computer screen.

I once took a college class on women film makers that showed some Schneeman films which had a profound effect on me. Her work will endure.

Also, I really enjoy how at that period of time in the late 60s/early 70s, the fissure between minimalism and post-minimalism metastasized as a referendum on the stoic masculinity of the artist that was even by that point a tired trope. And women like Carolee, Ana Mendieta, and Eva Hesse took aesthetic idioms and twisted them to points both absurd and riveting, exposing the superstructure of the art world for what it is and screamed out in ecstasy for more life - more possibilities - clues in the new direction.

I went to a weird little alternative highschool where I somehow managed to discover Schneemann and do an independent study on her work. She's worth a lot more attention and respect than she ever received. Mediocre artists make successful careers pretending to be half of what she authentically lived.
