Wikiwho: The game is, name the celebrity based on their Wikipedia table of contents. I got 24 out of 45, FWIW.

I invented* this game while hosting a pub quiz a few years back. The other fun variant is to post a map without a legend and people have to guess what the map represents.

* stole from Cool Freaks Wikipedia Club.

Well there goes the rest of my day... Cheers for the link, mate

My pub quiz does something similar with wikipedia categories. You get a list of categories and have to name the person they represent.

This is pretty fun.

10/40 - there's a lot of US-centric stuff in the quiz and my Canadian Heritage did me no good.

Dang, I knew I sucked at famous people but I really suck at famous people.

27/45. The latter half really worked me over.
posted by Etrigan at 7:25 AM on March 12, 2019

I thought I knew 5 of them; I was right about 4.

Part of it is that I'm terrible at remembering names. So for a bunch of them, I was like, "It's that one guy..."

I read extensively and have multiple master's degrees so people always think I'll be good at trivia, but I have a very hard time remembering facts: names, dates, numbers. So actually I such at trivia.

I'd have done much better if this quiz were multiple choice, or gave you hints like first initials or something.

16/45. Which is exciting. I didn't think I'd get that many, especially with the number of sports figures.

Also, how is it possible I chose Howard Hughes three times? (I was right once.)

I was spectacularly bad at that.

I got 24 but my poor recall of names had me referencing IMDB a lot.
Is that cheating?
posted by rocket88 at 8:16 AM on March 12, 2019

Yes, but since there are no prizes, you're only cheating yourself.

24 but I misspelled a few. The one with the public feuds cracked me up because I remembered all of those and the figure is not necessarily a name in every household.
posted by Navelgazer at 8:31 AM on March 12, 2019

8, and there were a few that, from name, I didn't even recognize. This was very fun, though.

I just want to point out that this game completely negates the point of wikipedia, which is that I don't need to remember all of this !#@$@# anymore (but can rather enter a few incomplete details into a search "actor-idiot-Disney-Spielberg-Indiana-Jones" ... and voila! Shia Leboeuf) and thus I have magnitudes more of my limited grey space to devote to other perhaps more important things.

This is fun!

I am not finished but so far I know a lot of politicians and I guessed "Colin Kaepernick" for what turned out to be Roseanne Barr.

15/45 with a lot of “that guy, that guy, OH FUCK WHAT IS THAT GUY’s NAME”.

The author of the quiz tweeted about his favorite entry that didn't make it into the quiz:

1.4 Ajax
1.4.1 2007–08 season
1.4.2 2008–09 season
1.4.3 2009–10 season
1.4.4 2010–11 season
1.4.4.1 First biting incident
1.4.4.2 Transfer to Liverpool
1.5 Liverpool
1.5.1 2010–11 season
1.5.2 2011–12 season
1.5.3 Racial abuse incident
1.5.4 2012–13 season
1.5.4.1 Second biting incident
1.5.5 2013–14 season, Player of the Year

Ah, Luis Suarez -- it's the "second biting incident" that gives it away.
posted by Cash4Lead at 10:47 AM on March 12, 2019

Zero. And I don't recognize most of the names after seeing them.

29/45 - but some of those I have no idea where I pulled them from. Well, I do, but this is a family publication.

I guessed wrong on Amelia Earheart but I really like the image of Margaret Mead that now lives in my head, who is said to have spied for Roosevelt and then been captured by Japan

12/45. I answered Larry Ellison for Peter Thiel and then when his own answer came up I couldn't think of anything.

I got five and only managed to answer 20. I have zero knowledge of sports and there's a lot of other stuff that I'm apparently completely unaware of.

20/45
I like how many of my misspellings still counted as correct
posted by soelo at 2:16 PM on March 12, 2019 [1 favorite]

I got 20, I think. It would be interesting to see what the most common wrong guesses were; I can't be the only person who saw early career, 70s stardom, downturn, resurgence and son's death and guessed Eric Clapton.

2/45

I feel so cheated on one of these, I was sure Betty White was WhatsHisFace from that gameshow in which they have extremely happy people playing Plinko?

(Uh, yeah, I'm bad at this.)

WhatsHisFace from that gameshow in which they have extremely happy people playing Plinko

Bob Barker. Price is right.

I was really annoyed with myself for thinking "I don't think that's X", but leaving it blank rather than just guessing X and having it, after all, be X.

Plus there were three names where I knew the person but just couldn't come up with the name.

There were a few names I would never have guessed and a bunch of people I've never heard of.

27/45.

It only offered me 36, but I got 19 of those right, mostly the old timers. Because I lived through a lot of it.

26/45, though it would have been 27/45 if I remembered that Anthony Weiner's first name was Andrew. Also, I cannot believe I guessed Benedict Arnold correctly. There are not very many clues in that entry.
posted by mhum at 7:48 PM on March 12, 2019

I guessed Peter Gregory because I couldn't remember Peter Thiel's name.
posted by ASCII Costanza head at 9:25 PM on March 12, 2019

3.1.1 Artificial intelligence
3.1.2 Life extension

I guessed Ray Kurzweil. Wasn't him, but I should get partial credit.

14/45, counting my two misspellings. And today I learned that Ben Affleck had a TRL incident. off to go wiki now...

10/45. I got a tick for "Emilia Earhart" so it's fairly generous. It's funny how you can have intuitions about celebrities. Like "seasteading? Hmmmmm... well, I've never heard of Peter Thiel funding that, but it seems like just the kind of thing he might do"
posted by L.P. Hatecraft at 2:24 AM on March 13, 2019

I got a point just for "Weiner" but misspelled Rod Blagojevich and lost one there.
I was sure about Thiel but then second guessed myself and put in L. Ron Hubbard for some reason. Probably because of the word sea.
The fact that pro wrestling made three entries no-brainers is down to me listening to way too many hours of pro wrestling podcasts.
There was that discredited "proof" of Amelia Earhart being captured by the Japanese maybe a year or two ago?

32/45, but I definitely left it on my screen for a couple hours while making coffee and trying to pull stuff way out of my brain.

#40 snookered me, and damn if #15 doesn't apply to about thirty assholes.

Nice near-match spelling checker, whoever did that. So often the fun of these kind of things are ruined by exact-matching.

19/45, but at least three of my wrong guesses were Lindsay Lohan.
