Journey North is a citizen science project that tracks animal migration patterns, such as ruby-throated hummingbirds, rufous hummingbirds, gray whales, and monarch butterflies.

Via Lanny Chambers of hummingbirds.net (previously) who has discontinued his annual ruby-throated hummingbird migration map after 23 seasons due to changes in the google maps API.

Oh man, I was excited enough about this AND THEN I noticed the organization hosting this effort is now my local arboretum! ❤️ Thanks for sharing.

I'm traveling and can't be bothered to create a new login for yet another site (but somehow still have time to comment, hmmm..) but the rufous hummingbirds reached Alaska early this year. I'd had birds at my feeder for weeks already before I left for my travel (don't worry; neighbors have taken over and will steal "my" hummingbirds..) I'd have to go back and check when I first texted or e-mailed a friend about their presence but I think it's possible they had made it to Ketchikan before March 1 this year, which is noticeably earlier than we usually get them.

Love this! I've been on the lookout for monarch butterflies lately (because I remember being delighted by last spring's first sighting of them), and I'm pleased to see that people in my area have already seen some these past couple of weeks.
