“[I]t was very important to me to show that women are gross.”

Tuca and Bertie is a new Netflix show about two bird women in their thirties living in the big city! You might recognize its general vibe thanks to creator Lisa Hanawalt, just profiled in The New York Times by Amanda Hess.
Hanawalt is probably best known as the artist who makes Bojack Horseman look deceptively cute and fills it with puns, but she’s also a co-host of the Baby Geniuses podcast, the author of two comics collections (Hot Dog Taste Test and My Dirty Dumb Eyes, in which Tuca and Bertie first show up) and the graphic novel Coyote Doggirl, and a former member of the now-defunct Brooklyn-based Pizza Island art studio.

I... I didn't know I wanted this

I'm really excited about this. I loved Hanawalt's book Hot Dog Taste Test, except I couldn't read it on transit because it was a bit more gross than I am comfortable sharing with my fellow passengers.

Also I did leave a food stain in the book but failed to hit the page labeled for that purpose.

Also it was a library book. I'm, uh, confirming this whole women being gross thing?

We saw a pre-color, pre-animation preview of this from Hanawalt at last year’s XOXO Fest, it looked like a lot of fun! Tiffany Haddish makes a great cartoon voice actor.

I've become such a big fan of Baby Geniuses over the past six months. The most recent episode is the perfect balance of insightful personal narrative and stupid jokes about sex stuff.

I dunno, Hanawalt says alfajores are bad and I don't know if I can get past that. The recipe for alfajores is literally to remove everything bad from the world and bake what remains into a confection.

Does that red bird sound to you like the girl in Gravity Falls?

She does sound kind of similar to Mabel! I looked it up just to make super certain, because Mabel is voiced by Kristen Schaal (a brilliant genius) and I was like, have I been wrong this whole time? But no. Ali Wong voices Bertie in this. I wouldn't be surprised if they've influenced each other's inflections and voice acting styles, though. It sure was entertaining when my brain imagined Mabel going "shitshitshitshitshit" for a hot second.

I really like the way this flatly destroys the abomination that is the romper. They should not be.

I follow her on instagram and have greatly enjoyed the videos she makes of her fjord pony. That mane!

She used to occasionally draw things for the Hairpin or the Toast, that is how I first came across her work.

I love Ali Wong and I love Tiffany Haddish, and I especially love them as cartoon birds. Wins all around.

Stylistically, Pizza Island’s members (inhabitants?) were quite different; Hanawalt’s riots of color and detail had most in common with the work of Domitille Collardey and less with the black-and-white narrative strips of Julia Wertz (The Fart Party) and Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie), the bluntly hilarious historical reconsiderations of Kate Beaton (Hark! A Vagrant!), and the ink-washed graphic journalism of Sarah Glidden.

I had forgotten that all those folks were at Pizza Island. What a powerhouse.

From watching the trailer, this looks to be very well done and interesting.

I did like Bojack Horseman, but I ended up finding it too oppressively depressing for me to keep up with after the second season. But on the subject of Lisa Hanawalt, I offer this really wonderful talk she gave in 2015 on her journey into the world of television, and what being 'productive' at art really means. I found it hugely motivating at the time and think back to her words here often. Plus she's just super charming.

Baby Geniuses is so good, and one of the only good things about the last couple years is seeing Lisa and Emily start getting the massive personal success they both deserve.

This show is such a delight. From the trailer I thought it would be too frenetic to enjoy, but it turns out to be just frenetic enough. And there's so much detail that I am definitely going to have to rewatch a couple of times and pause to read the backgrounds.

I love that the very first shot of the opening credits is a building with boobs. It tells you in less than a second if this is a show you'll like or not.
