Not only was the dancing that fast in real life, but you can still find social dances where that is the pace for at least some of the songs. Here in New York, Glenn Crytzer is a band leader who sprigs to kind. I joke that he has two speeds, Hellzapoppin and molasses. I’m not coordinated enough to dance at either speed.

(a quibble with the title- quite a few old time Lindy Hoppers are still with us!! She was the last of her generation of Savoy Lindy Hoppers. Young people in Harlem kept dancing at the Savoy into the 50s until it closed)
