this account now belongs to the foxen

“pssst guys GUYS the coolest thing just happened” is how it all began, back on April 18, when author and MetaFilter favorite Chuck Wendig (previously, previouslier) spotted an elusive fox out behind his writing shed.

From this one tweet grew a sprawling epic, now 238 tweets (I think) and counting, a tale of not one, not two, not three, not four, but five fox kits growing up before his eyes.

It's a saga of adventure and cuteness, of impertinence and ferocity and a MeFi favorite poetic form, and then more adventure and more cuteness, and still more cuteness, in general giving us hope in these troubled times.

Along the way, you realize Wendig may have the inspiration for a new book, though he may have to cut in some partners or face a legal battle -- if the partners haven't already devised a nefarious plan.

For the Twitter-averse, there is a photos-only Flickr gallery. But the best way to experience it all is the slow daily unfold on Twitter, as Wendig slides toward lunacy, while heroically resisting the urge to engage in questionable science, giving a new and better meaning to the words “Fox News.”

Alas, even foxes grow up and move on, apparently, and sightings are becoming scarce. But we'll always have the cuddling log.

At one point the foxes were trying to burrow into the writing shed, and then a few days later, Wendig was denying that he was a bunch of foxes walking around in a human suit.

Which is exactly the sort of thing a bunch of foxes walking around in a human suit would say!

(Also I love his podcast with Anthony Carboni, it started out as talking about Thor: Ragnatalk in 10-minute increments and has continued to other subjects now that they've finished the film.)

the nefarious plan! seriously, there's so much joy and crazy fun in there, even with all those links, I barely scratched the surface. didn't even include the cutest photos -- had to leave some stuff as an exercise for the readers.

I've been meaning to try one of his books, and this Twitter thread finally got me off the fence. Maybe that's part of the plan, too...

Here I thought I was lucky a couple weeks ago to watch six baby cottontail rabbits emerge from their den and take off in all different directions, all while the mother rabbit looked on with this forlorn air. Since their departure I haven't seen more than two of them together in relatively the same place.

I love foxes! Currently I have two boys who come around and stare at me through the kitchen screen door. Beautiful creatures!

NO! I do not feed them!

I see a fox when I walk in the wee hours, just me and Mrs Fox (and an occasional weasel or hedgehog) crossing streets and listening to night noises.

Thank you for posting this- made my day! I wish I had the opportunity to mount a benign espionage mission on a fox family. Also Bloxworth Snout- that is an adorable picture.

I do rather like foxes (and the idea of wild animals living in suburban London) but I'm definitely not keen on the overpowering smell of fox pee that greets me when I head off to work most mornings (or the rubbish strewn across the garden from them foraging in the rubbish of neighbors who don't dispose of it securely)

I'm guessing he's not a Londoner then; London has hot and cold running foxes in every street.

The fox I know squatted very nicely over a storm drain in the street the other night.
