Pinto prefers to talk about what he has uncovered, and to describe the evolution of European soccer from a varied and distinctive game to a corrupt playground for the international élite, in which only the richest, least scrupulous clubs can thrive. Pinto sees the future currently awaiting European soccer as bland and predictable. “It will be like plastic,” he said. How Football Leaks Is Exposing Corruption in European Soccer [SLNYer]

Great expose. None of this really surprises me. Thank you for a wonderful read.

Not to derail the convo but recently I got in to a discussion with folks regarding, is there a way to not use money as the equalizer between disparate groups. To pay someone hundreds of millions of euros for a few years of their lives is just mind boggling. But yet that’s the money pouring in. A million to local communities is great optics but gads we are living in separated times. It seems like there is just too much money around. Hopefully the tax man will cometh.

Absolutely amazing article. (CW for a transcript of Cristiano Ronaldo describing a rape he carried out.) Pinto’s hacking and leaking seems equally deserving of protection as that of say, the Panama Papers. This is probably best thought of as a story about corrupt big business and tax evasion, rather than a specific sport.

Corruption, tax evasion and really, really lax network security, apparently.
