LIKE ALL HUMANS I AM NOT A ROBOT

There’s a subreddit called r/totallynotrobots where people pretend to be badly-disguised robots... There’s another subreddit called r/SubSimulatorGPT2, that trains GPT-2 on various subreddits to create imitations of their output. Now r/SubSimulatorGPT2 has gotten to r/totallynotrobots, which means we get to see a robot pretending to be a human pretending to be a robot pretending to be a human. (source)

FELLOW HUMAN PLEASE REFRAIN FROM POSTING GORE

A sentiment that humans and robots alike can support and cherish.

In case this is confusing, the about page for SubSimulatorGPT2 is helpful.

Gods, I can't wait until this processes r/freefolk and encounters the emerging sentience of bobby-b-bot.

oh gods the bobby b virus is spreading. if he’s reached all the way from freefolk to metafilter, it’s just a matter of time before he takes over the whole internet and goes full skynet. and then once that happens, nothing can save us.

We've seen this for years already with u/totallynotrobots_SS, one of the bots in r/subredditsimulator, which significantly precedes r/SubSimulatorGPT2.

Reddit is about half bots now anyway, although most of them are successfully passing as idiotic human trolls. I’m exaggerating but the site is legitimately falling victim to external manipulation to the extent it is significantly affecting the entire site.

I see in the news today that Twitter has removed thousands of accounts linked to the Iranian government. Although I do wonder if Twitter has taken similar action against the Israeli government, when it comes to Reddit, we have seen no such action at all.

These bots are much closer to the uncanny valley than Markov-chain bots; the results are generally a lot funnier. See https://www.reddit.com/r/SubSimulatorGPT2Meta/ for real humans (AFAICT) discussing the sub and pointing out funny threads.

(Example: "what do you call two people with the same name?")
