A week out from the launch of the game's third expansion, Shadowbringers, the folks at Square Enix have dropped an ad for Final Fantasy XIV where Hannibal Buress works on training Tom Holland to be the Warrior of Darkness.

Japan, on the other hand, gets an anime catgirl having fun with friends.

Hype for the upcoming expansion has been intensifying, especially since E3 had the dev teams drop a new trailer with massive new implications for the lore of the game, furiously spawning all sorts of conjecture. Not everything has been positive, as the reveal of the long awaited Dancer job as ranged DPS had players wanting a new healer job upset, and the reveal that the two new races - the lapine Viera and leonine Hrothgar - would be gender locked caused more consternation. But with the player base at an all time high, players are overall excited for the expansion.

Final Fantasy XIV previously.

That was fun. I wish this was on Xbox though I do have a PS4. Dedicating myself to a MMO these days seems not feasible. Still... I... am tempted.

This is purely Microsoft's fault - SE would love to have an XB1 client, but will not give up full cross play.

Pepsi BLU?

I'm just about ready for the Shadowbringers release, though the recent influx has meant that my entire data center has become congested. At least my queue times have improved :)

For those looking for a little more insight into FFXIV in general, I have been enjoying pretty much everything Heather Alexandra has written about it for Kotaku (link). It's a very cool game, and it's neat to see that everyone seems to play it a little bit differently.

I retired last year; I am prone to committing far too much time to MMOs and I had to stop. But the community (at least IME) was pretty great, and they keep adding lots of quality-of-life improvements.

I just started playing a month or so ago, and I'm having a lot of fun. I appreciate that I can log on and do one of about a dozen activities that all feel pretty different, and I'm nowhere near the endgame - it's got the best crafting I've seen in an MMO, the most interesting gathering, the most in-depth fishing (yes, it's still boring. Fishing is boring.) The group content has even been fairly interesting, even if the way the queue tends to work means I've run the first two dungeons about thirty times each and the later ones barely a handful.

And while I have heard that the story gets way better in the expansions, I gotta say, it's still better than any other MMO I've found. Even the little class quest chains have on occasion actually surprised me. (The Pugilist line is particularly adorable; the Paladin line managed to be both obvious in hindsight and yet not what I expected.)

Sigh, the gender-lock is super disappointing along with the official reply. I'm still interested in the new job upgrades and areas but just a little sad on the state of character customization. MMOs still a huge time sink that I find myself falling into every other month.

Oh I also need to shout out the female Rogaedyn for being another entry in the very, VERY short list of video game character options that are an aspirational body type *for me*. (Although I ain't never gonna be seven feet tall.)

FFXIV is relatively unique among MMOs in that you're perfectly able to simply ... play the game as an almost-single-player RPG, teaming up for dungeons through the automated group-finder, and just enjoy the story. And it's a damn fine story.

You don't have to go whole-hog MMO to enjoy a good 95% of the offering.

There's also a lot to do that isn't just raiding, as well. One big thing we're getting in the new expansion is a crafting/gathering endgame with actual competition.

Also, at the recent Producer Live Letter (a big presentation where game producer Naoki Yoshida talks about upcoming changes to the game), someone asked him if, given the hype around World of Warcraft Classic, he was considering creating legacy 1.0 servers.

(NB: 1.0 is an infamous train wreck, and part of the reason Yoshida is so beloved is because of how he made it into a working game with 2.0.)

The look on his face is a sight to behold.

This is pretty much how I play it. Picked it up a couple of months back and am enjoying it.

Would be nice to do the odd dungeon with friends who wanted to slow down and enjoy the story, but I accept that they've all got kids these days so the times of them joining me for long, random wanders through a game world are sadly passed.

I'm not sure about relatively unique--that sounds like how I play WoW. While I'm technically in a guild, it has been a long time since I did anything other than the automated group-finder. I really do basically play it as a single-player RPG.
