It’s an actual penguin now! An emperor penguin!

As a lapsed fan of the Orioles, I'm glad someone else acknowledges that the current logo looks horrible. It's like if the Boston Red Sox abandoned the B or sock motif and put Wally as their official logo.

Absolutely here for bird-based pedantry.

This is the kind of pedantry I can get behind.

And yes, that new Orioles logo, good lord.

The murderous visage of the New Orleans Pelicans mascot is accurate, especially if hanging around a dock and you have what it thinks is food in your hand. They'll take a chunk out of you.

Not as many changes as I would expect; however, I disagree with their proposed Anaheim Ducks logo. My modest proposal (could alternately be used for the Panthers or Islanders).

The cocky Oriole is great, and most of these revamps suck (although I guess the joke is that they're all ugly but realistic).

The updated Pelicans logo should have more blood.

A Steller's sea eagle might be a little more exciting to use as a basis than an osprey when you're doing the Seahawks logo.

I feel like the cartoony Orioles logo has been around forever (like from when I was a kid in the 80s anyway); it feels much more familiar than the bird one. Am I totally misremembering?

And obviously the reason they didn’t do MLS teams is that there’s obviously no way to improve or need to correct the Minnesota logo.

The fixed Blue Jays logo is great. If I were into sports merchandise, I'd rather that than the current.

The Cardinals logo also needs to get the proportions correct. Craig Robinson has it covered.

I confess a certain horrified fascination with the Red Sox alternate logo from the 1950s.

The fixed Blue Jays, Eagles, and Penguins logos should go into production immediately. They're clearly better and are only minor tweaks to the existing logos. As for the red-beaked cardinals, I gotta say that I can see why the logo designers went with the inaccurate but contrasting yellow beaks.

As a former silk screener, I can't help but notice that most of the changes add a color, which is another screen, more money. Some logos are designed around color limitations. If you asked me if it was worth 10 cents a print to add the black on the Blue Jays logo to several thousand shirts, I'd say it wasn't worth it.

Here's the Orioles historical logos- you're remembering correctly. The naturalistic logos started in 1992.

Indeed, in the case of the Penguins and Eagles, they're adding a new yellow layer which might be a hassle. However, the beauty of the Blue Jays change is that it's not a color addition but a color substitution: the dark blue in the beak/eye/throat that's being turned into black doesn't appear anywhere else in the logo.

Holy cow, that Penguins logo is uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugly. Both iterations. It looks suspiciously like what we in the business call “nephew art.” As in, “the manager’s nephew drew it.” How have they avoided an upgrade on that thing?

So the real Eagles logo really has that weird flat angular part on the front of the beak? That ... sucks.

That Cartoon Orioles logo inspires revulsion in me for some reason. I instinctively hate it. I'm not sure what sort of cartoon trauma as a kid provokes that reaction, but... No. Hate it.

I like the old school oriole cartoons in zamboni's link though.

The cartoon Oriole definitely has a "yeah I smoked all your weed" vibe

The Falcons logo is stylized, I get it, but it doesn’t make a lick of sense (why is its foot sticking out?)

The foot is sticking out to make the falcon look like the letter F.

There is no such thing as a “sea hawk” and their logo is goddamn perfect thank you very much.

I may not have this correct, but as I understand it, actual penguins do not play hockey.

FWIW, Pittsburgh has the National Aviary, which has penguins with a variety of names, but a lot of them are hockey themed. There's a Stanley and of course a Sidney. Patrick, Disco, Mary Beth (the latter two are from former coach Dan Bylsma's tenure), Elvis and Flower (former goalie Fleury). I want to say at one point we had one named after Max Talbot too, but that may have been the zoo...

The North American Penguin Hockey League folded in the late 1989s after interverntion from PETA and ticket sales failed to meet expectations.

The original 8 teams were: The Calgary Flappers, The New York Tuxedos, The Pittsburgh Real Penguins, The Detroit Ice Bandits, The Ottawa Sophisticates, The Toronto Penguin Leafs, The Greenland Islanders, and the Vancouver Shorty Georges.

Flagged as fantastic. I need logos for these teams immediately.

Sometimes the penguins meet their namesakes, too!
