I feel this needs to be appended with the terms made up by Webshit Weekly.

Techbro is on there but not brogrammer. Though the latter is somewhat related to techbro, I feel it is distinct enough to merit its own entry.

Cf - The Devil's DP Dictionary.

(note for younger readers: DP = Data Processing, what all this stuff was called in the 70s and 80s)

From a few decades back, The Devil's DP Dictionary, which was published in 1981 and was the first adaptation of this particular trope into the silicon age. Venerable enough to have an ACM citation, but not timeless enough to merit reprinting (although a heavily revised second edition was published in 1995, just at the dawn of the dotcom era and mere months too early for jokes about Yahoo or Netscape).

Thanks to Wikipedia I've learned that the author had not only pretty solid credentials in the tech industry but also in folk music circles. That makes his singling out the Irish for so much abuse and stereotyping in his book even more incongruously harsh in hindsight than it did when I read it in the early 1980s in middle America.

"Don’t Be Evil (ph) Google’s original corporate motto. Deprecated."

Beautifully succinct.

I was going to reply that "brogrammer" was soooooo 2012, while techbro is in heavy use, but a quick check of Google Trends shows that it's actual "brogrammer" that's more popular, and that no one outside of California ever searches for "techbro".

I use "techbro" at least once a day, and today is the first time I've even seen the word "brogrammer" written out in like 5 years.

"brogrammer" is a superior portmanteau but I can imagine why California had to adapt to include people who are definitely bros but have no discernible programming ability.

This is our political system in a nutshell.

Showed up to mention The Devil's DP Dictionary. Glad to see the other old-timers are still alive and kicking.

The definition for "Apology" was remarkably close to Bierce's. Bierce wrote that to apologize is to "lay the foundation for future offenses."

microdosing (n) – Taking small amounts of illegal drugs while white. It may be possible to microdose without writing a book or personal essay about it, but the evidence suggests otherwise.

omg yes, this is the best one.

Let's not forget that Stan Kelly-Bootle updated the excellent Devil's DP Dictionary in 1995, and called it The Computer Contradictionary.

Agree with most of the definitions, but a minor tweak on one:

"Usually located in a city or town whose elected officials exchanged tens of millions of dollars in tax breaks for seven full-time contract positions for security guard jobs."
