All Art Comes From Life

I saw "One Year Performance 1980–1981 (Time Clock Piece)" at the Guggenheim almost a decade ago and still remember it. I found it fascinating. I didn't realize until I read the links that this appears to have been his first major show, and when the art world started to take real notice of him. Obviously artists aren't always in it for public acclaim but to go to such lengths for performance art that wasn't being widely consumed demonstrates a very strong sense of determination, to me. I imagine his current show at the Venice Bicentennial is pretty spectacular.

I learned about him recently through this confounding and engaging interview in The Believer.

Ever since I heard about Rope Piece decades ago, I have not been able to forget it. Never knew the artist's name until now, though. Fascinating interview in The Believer. Hsieh's picture should be in the dictionary next to the expression sui generis.

I wonder what a sentimental/reactionary/kitsch performance artist would be like. Like if Thomas Kinkade had done performance art, not painting.

Maybe like flash mobs?

This is cool, I didn't know of him. That timeclock every hour for a year piece, that is crazy. Thank you for posting it.
