This is a rollicking great song and a fucking anthem all in one. Each of these women is a pretty fantastic artist/songwriter in her own right and this album is going to kick ass. Only two tracks have come out from The Highwomen so far, the one above and Crowded Table. (And also their cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain as heard in the trailer for The Kitchen.) Still, I'm excited to hear it.

That Rolling Stone piece is convinced this record "is a fucking hit" and that Nashville won't have a choice but to play it on country radio, even with its pronounced aversion to playing female artists. I'm skeptical, though, as the Pistol Annies (Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe, and my super-duper holy-shit-this-person-is-awesome-A#1-fave Angaleena Presley) put out a similarly heraded record less than a year ago that managed to hit #1 on the country charts and still didn't get its irresistible lead single (Got My Name Changed Back) into the top 40.

That record is a fucking stunner if you haven't heard it. In the case of Interstate Gospel, the feminist wakeup call is coming from inside the house. It's a record about wives who've had enough, ex-wives who aren't sorry, and moms who aren't even going to visit your sorry ass in prison.

Glad to see this. Amanda Shires is badass.

They have such beautiful voices, I like how roomy and loose this song feels.

Well, "Got My Name Changed Back" has been stuck in my head for two hours so thanks for that

And if you want to get a sense of them live, The Highwomen are scheduled to be on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday (July 30).

Also: Shires' husband, Jason Isbell (possibly the best songwriter in the game), played guitar on that version of The Chain, and it's excellent.

Word out of the Newport Folk Festival from today, where The Highwomen performed their first set, is that they were fantastic. Twitter has a clip from The Chain.

I've always listened to country-adjacent and a little bit of country, sometimes without explicitly seeking it out (growing up in Iowa, it's pretty much in the water), but the shutout of women from the increasingly centralized radio landscapes is one of the reasons I stepped away and found other things to occupy my radio presets. Women's voices have always been in the minority in the genre, but they were also always such strong voices with some true anthems of empowerment, and the gradual shrinking of women's share of country radio airplay over the past 20 years is appalling.

I'm not much of a country fan but I just played that video 3 times in a row. That tune is a serious ear worm before you consider the message.

Here's Dolly and the Highwomen singing Eagle When She Flies at Newport, plus a lovely acoustic version on Twitter.

Maren Morris seems like a nice person, but I do not get her appeal at all. She always comes off as blandly professional. I hoped she would have more of a personality in the Highwomen, but... no.
