The Soul Mates Project (previously 1 2) is a mashup project by Amerigo Gazaway that traces the roots of hip-hop and the history of music by imagining “collaborations that never were.”
Lots of stuff on the bandcamp and youtube but of the stuff I've listened to I'm digging the Lauryn Hill x Nina Simone and the Yasiin Bey x Marvin Gaye 1, 2.
I think there's other stuff on Amerigo's personal bandcamp which isn't on the Soul Mates one, but I haven't checked it all out yet.

His stuff is good but the best one by far is the UGK/BB King project “The Trill is Gone,” which is absolutely amazing.

There's so much going on in that UGK/BB King release -- it is next-level fantastic -- that I'm having trouble processing on a Sunday nite. I was hoping to drink a beer and soak in familiar tunes before work Monday, and now I have to absorb two generations of talent at once... I'm gonna need an extra beer or three to make sense of this.
In particular loving how the mash-up likely started, not from music styles, but from the song titles: Thrill is Gone <> One Day +"Trill" from UGK/Houston slang. (Is that term common outside of the Houston hiphop scene?)

Loving both and knowing much of the work of both, I clicked the link and it started playing. It was terrible. I thought, I'm going to have to play old man hip hop grump. And then the beat really kicked in and Lauryn started in heavy and I was like oh shiiit!!
After that, I scanned the playlist. Could be a fluke. Ooh, "Lost Ones", so I played that. Straight fire. Mixed it with Sinnerman, which is a dicey prospect in light of the absolute Filth Talib Kweli put out with it. But it was great. I let it ride and Killing Me Softly came on, and it uses Nina's "Aint Got", which is one of my favorite (live) songs by her. Okay, you're right. This is good. Great find.
