Bom

Bom is some sort of project management company, but I'm more impressed by their whiz-bang cool design on their site. Kinda like the HabboHotel, Eboy (their town), and k10k aesthetic taken corporate.

I like the way bom has made boring concepts visually interesting. A lot like the work xplane does, making the banal fun.

I believe that the Bom site was developed in part by xplane.

it's actually a pretty interesting premise for a company - they take a specific piece of the product design process (the BOM) and standardize it & make it happen electronically, on a subscription model. and while it is really very targeted to that specific process, the model is one of the rare, successful business to business collaboration tools we all thought the web might be about someday.

netbabyworld.com is also pixelated... but wasn't that style "whiz-bang cool" yesterday?

Though such a question might be better suited in a boardroom or a business forum, I think there might be some trouble with the "bom model" in the way that companies should be wary of centralizing all the information about their most crucial operations at a second party. Interesting concept nonetheless, though.

The tiny print hurts my eyes on my whiz-bang cool resolution. Simple, usable designs such as the ones outlined in Tufte's book are my favorite.

The best design is where I don't think of the design.

Was wondering when someone would bring forth the usual "the tiny print hurts my eyes"-comment - which to me is complete nonsense. Design is not a one-size-fits-all thing, fortunately - and I think Bom is fun because it's different.

Anyway, does anyone know if xplane did the old version of Seven? The similarities are remarkable.

We really like the bom site here at XPLANE, but we didn't do it. Looks like Zaudhaus are the good folks responsible. I don't know who did the old Seven but it's not quite as elegant as bom...
