Native Music for Today

We Are One "Today on Indigenous Peoples' Day and every day we are here to say that We Are Still Here. Research has shown that the lack of representation of Native peoples in mainstream society creates a void that limits the understanding and knowledge that Americans have of Native communities. We [Illuminatives] are here to fight the invisibility that Natives face by amplifying contemporary, authentic Native voices, and supporting Native peoples tell their story." From the nicely formatted pdf:

BELIEVES NATIVE PEOPLES SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR COLUMBUS BECAUSE HE BROUGHT “CIVILIZATION.”

This is where choosing your battles is key. Sometimes, you can try educating the opposing side and sharing with them the historical and contemporary contributions Indigenous people have made to society. Other times, it is best not to engage because these comments are stemming from deeply rooted stereotypes that are (likely) not going to be changed in one conversation.

Truer words were never spoken.

Thanks for this post. As a native-but-fraught individual, I mostly keep my head down on this day but the support, attention, and affirmation that I see more of year after year is welcome after a childhood of all Columbus all the time.

I mean, it’s the little things but their take is straight and true in the next paragraph even. If only the rest of the internet got the memo:

IN SOME CONTEXTS, IT IS BEST NOT TO ENGAGE WITH THE OPPOSITION. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR HOSTILE SITUATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, YOUR TEAM MAY RECEIVE RACIST OR DEMEANING COMMENTS, AND THAT IS WHEN YOU MUST PICK AND CHOOSE
YOUR BATTLES BECAUSE THE EMOTIONAL LABOR THAT GOES INTO ENGAGING WITH SUCH OPPOSITION CAN TAKE YOUR FOCUS AWAY FROM WHAT ACTUALLY NEEDS TO BE DONE HERE. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR YOUTH – IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO NOT LOOK AT THE COMMENTS SECTION OF MEDIA ARTICLES. DO NOT ENGAGE WITH PEOPLE THAT CHOOSE NOT TO HEAR AND UNDERSTAND YOU.

Thanks for this post, for the toolkit and the music!

Yesterday was the first time New Mexico celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day (Albuquerque Journal), complete with a big event in Albuquerque, to commemorate the first day Columbus Day was replaced for the entire state (Santa Fe adopted Indigenous Peoples Day in 2016, as Albuquerque did in 2015, after which our former governor was asked about adopting it for the entire state -- she was surprised by the question, and had a non-answer).
