And here I am with this dulcimer…

I don't know what I was expecting based on the post title, but this is so much better than whatever it was.

War Pigs is especially fun!

I was delighted to find his covers of Tom Lehrer's The Masochism Tango, and Blondie's "Call me".

Amazing — that video of “Call Me” only has like 5000 views. He is shredding that song like a boss!

For me it was orthogonally as good as what I imagined. My imagination has this this without an amp, at maybe half that speed, and the bard in medieval clothing singing along all bardy style.

Oh, and with a troupe dancing along behind.

Yeah, this is really good. His acoustic, folkie version of Call Me is fantastic — not just for his delivery, but also he's playing it on a traditional diatonic dulcimer. Many of his other tracks are on chromatic dulcimers, which make all songs possible.

Also shreds Crazy Train.

If this gives anyone the itch to try it out, I highly recommend this little 3- string diatonic dulcimer you hold like a guitar. Super easy to pick up to a of simple tunes, including lots of punk. I can’t really play stringed instruments but I can play this ok, it’s like easy mode :)

See also Richard Thompson demonstrating that Oops I Did It Again has a core sequence reminiscent of the 16th century (at 3'20").

Punk and dulcimer. Two words that go together like oreos and salmon.

Yeah, but the original was exciting because the early Ramones really couldn't play their dulcimers.

Punk and folk are not really that different, and if you don’t agree maybe you should spend more time with those genres and their histories.
Or go check out the modern folk punk acts, many of which are great :)

This what the internet was made for. Thanks!

That some of the instruments he's playing these on don't look like they have chromatic frets seems very strange. (But, I don't actually know anything about string instruments, so perhaps I'm missing something.)

Yes, the traditional/historical mountain dulcimer is fretted diatonically, usually 3-4 strings, sometimes 5.

This brings lots of convenience for solo play but introduces challenges when playing with other instruments. It’s a bit too expensive and bulky to own a dozen (like you can for harmonicas), but, like the harmonica, there are some clever tricks you can use by playing in different “positions”.

Similar to the Strumstick in ergonomics but with really nice fit and finish is the Seagull m4. Takes 3 electric guitar strings. Slightly too small a range to be universally useful, but pretty and light.

Given that I never tire of telling people about how Ricky Wilson of The B-52's played guitar in numerous different dulcimer tunings, it would be lovely to hear this guy's take on Rock Lobster

This guy is brilliant.

Heh.

*clanks into room*

"What is THAT?"

"A harmonica belt, but for dulcimers."

If this guy puts out an album, the cover should be him kneeling in front of a burning dulcimer, a la Jimi Hendrix.
