The queer Jewish holiday film of our dreams: heyalma.com announces the winner of their Hanukkah Holiday-movie pitch challenge, because Jews want silly rom-coms too, especially if they are deep-fried. Inspired by last year's hilarious pitches by Kate Shulman.

These are unlikely to be made by Hallmark - who's own effort was sadly off the mark - but they can live in our heads.

thank you to Mchelly for reminding me that I can post funny Hanukkah stuff here, and confession: I've never seen a Hallmark Christmas movie. But I would totally watch these, especially if they came with all-you-can-eat latkes.

Indeed, Hallmark caved under pressure of criticism about a recent commercial that portrayed a same sex couple planning their marriage and the ad was pulled. Fuck Hallmark for bowing to this kind of ugly pressure.

And I want to see the Holiday/Christmas Rom-Com treatment get a bit more diverse and varied. Great post jb.

And: Hallmark’s making some Hanukkah movies. The only problem? They’re anti-Semitic. "The sheer ubiquity of Christmas is exactly what makes these plotlines so implausible. ... We are bombarded by Christmas! TV ads, movies and Mariah Carey singles have prepared us for this situation, should it ever arise: We could decorate a pine tree and put presents under it; we know to leave milk and cookies for Santa; we know the words to all the Christmas carols by heart. It would be much more believable if a Christian character didn’t know how to celebrate Hanukkah..."

Fizz, good news, they reinstated the add.

Doesn't make them a whole lot better, just that they can be persuaded via bad publicity to not be complete dickish fools.

It's nice to know when someone doesn't have convictions; it saves the trouble of asking them to have courage.

I would totally watch this.

Just as an aside, have there been any Hollywood movies where the Jewish protagonist actually ends up with another Jewish person?

When Harry Met Sally. Sally's a stand-in for Nora Ephron. It's not literally explicit, but pretty clear, Big Sheldon and all.

This seems like the right place to mention that Idina Menzel has a new Christmas album with a version of Ocho Kandelikas and it's very...camp.

How will Alana juggle Bubbe’s hopes AND 16 (yes, 16) smokin’ hot Jewish dudes, nine of whom are named David?

We're laughing because it's true. A friend of mine had Passover with his partner's large family - and only one man in attendance was not named David (and it was not my friend or his father-in-law, both of whom are, of course, Davids).

It's not been filmed, but I have read a sweet, extremely cheesy/silly Hanukkah romance novel - too queer for Hallmark, but maybe Logo would make it?

I absolutely love this and I am desperate to see a Rachel/Audra sort of romance. It makes me squee.
