"Fast Horse[YouTube, CBC]: [a documentary that] follows the return of the Blackfoot bareback horse-racing tradition in a new form: the Indian Relay. Siksika horseman Allison Red Crow struggles to build a team with second-hand races and a new jockey, Cody Big Tobacco, to take on the best riders in the Blackfoot Confederacy at the Calgary Stampede."

Indian Relay [PBS]: "From the bitter cold of winter on the Rocky Mountain front to the heat and mayhem of the summer's championship races in Montana and Idaho, Indian Relay follows three teams from different American Indian communities as they prepare for and compete in a grueling Indian Relay season."

Horse Nations Indian Relay Council - "Imagine if you will watching five determined teams consisting of three horses, one rider, one mugger and two holders, entering the track, each taking their designated box in preparation to the start of the race. All of the teams have spent months practicing for the start of the race, ready to leap into action, confident that they will bring home the honors. Each of the fifteen horses are primed ready to leap into action, anticipating the glory of the race. The holders and mugger ready to do their job, despite the risk of personal injury to themselves, as the horses come in for their exchanges."

Indian Relays run in Sheridan, Wyoming[Native Sun News] - "On July 20, 2019, the Mountain Crow Indian Relay Team bested 26 other teams from around Indian Country to win the prestigious Sheridan WYO rodeo event, paying $10,000. I got to see Fast Horse as part of the Banff film festival. I wanted to try to go to the Indian Relay at this last Calgary Stampede but we couldn’t make the schedule work. It’s an incredible sport, and also completely terrifying to me. I ride horses but they are large, not entirely predictable monsters and I can’t imagine leaping on and off them while a dozen others race by.

Oh, that was wonderful! Bareback riding is so much more difficult than riding with a saddle. I love the connect6he felt with the horse.

I lived in Calgary for a few years but didn't go to the stampede because I was afraid of seeing animal abuse.
