“Its call goes something like this…”

A two minute clip of the 10th annual Leonard J Waxdeck bird calling contest at Piedmont High School. (May, 1973)

A 46-second history of the contest. Judging criteria.
You can find assorted videos of winners from different years performing on various late-night shows, which I leave as an exercise for the viewer.

Love it. Seems that some birds enjoy imitating humans too.

This makes me absurdly happy.

Didn’t know how badly I needed that. Thanks.

I'd love to know the names of the birds each person is imitating, if anyone knows. I was seriously doubting some of them were real, and then one of those won, so clearly I don't know anything.

Or am I misjudging the point of this

This is making me want to watch Don Knotts' performance of "Summer In The Meadow" from The Love God, but I can't find a clip online. Boo.

If you hunt down the clips from the Tonight Show, you’ll see that the students do indeed pick particular birds to imitate. I just found this decontextualized two minutes to be more fun.
