This was interesting, despite being written in a really odd style. I really got interested in North Korea after reading all of the Inspector O novels, about a North Korean detective, written by former embassy employee "James Church" The books align with many elements of this story: the surprising porousness of the borders, cooperation between the Chinese and North Koreans; the vast amounts of smuggling and underground economies, and the systemic corruption everywhere.

This is essentially the plot of the Korean drama series Crash Landing on You, which is actually not that bad as Korean soap operas go - you can watch it with subtitles on Netflix. Crash Landing on You is in many ways a typical K-drama romance, but has been widely praised for its well-researched and nuanced portrayal of North Korea, something it achieved by having a real-life North Korean defector on its writing team.
