Tuba Skinny -- Maple Leaf Rag

Tuba Skinny

I just ran across this band on YouTube, where they have several videos. But as I type with one finger on my phone, I lack the patience to add those links. Please feel free to do so.

And then VIRTUALLY TIP THE BAND:

We are all in this together.

PS. Love the dog, I do.

I've been a fan for quite sometime. In fact made a trip to New Orleans specifically to catch them playing a couple clubs last fall. As a bonus caught them on the street during the afternoon.

In the first link above, I especially love the woman sitting on the bass drum as she plays it. Something about that just tickles me to death.

I also really love the attitude they project.
Like... playing music this well together is as casual for them as breathing. Like they literally barely notice that they are doing it.

Going Back Home” is one of my favorites.
Also “Gotta Give Me Some.”

In marching band, we debated whether people chose instruments to suit personality or whether instruments change personality. One or the other must be true. Trumpeters are typically egomaniacal extroverts, quirky folks play sax, etc. Something must explain the correlations. I am in the latter camp. The one time I had to play bass drum in a parade I immediately became a loutish, shouty jerk. I was horrified and never played it again.

That's why the drummer in this band fascinates me. She's playing the bass drum casually. She's relaxed, as though she's just playing around with it. It's the first chill bass drumming I've ever seen.

I spent half the song wondering why the trombone player was off screen.

Texted this to my sister because I thought she'd like them and she said, oh, I know them. We met the drummer last time we were in New Orleans; she's a friend of my step-daughter's. Small world.
