This post reminded me of rebeccapurple.

Ah well. Sadness.

This is ok but it seems to be entirely based on the opinions of random internet people browsing the site. Like what if I have a particular color, say oh I don't know, #336699 that's tied to an existing property and I want to send fans of said property to vote this up? I don't see a way to do it.

But maybe that's for the best because then all the colors would be named after Twitter celebrities and Instagram influencers.

look, it's Metafilter Blue

Ah I see how the URL structure works now. Thank you, sciatrix.

Naming something and then not voting for it strikes me as more of a Guess Culture thing.

Is there any way to filter for most votes? Really want to see the battlegrounds here, #336699 nonwithstanding.

Two schools here. One naming nail polish colors and the other artistically describing the feeling/thought/memory/image a color brings to mind.

I just tried naming a particular shade of pink "Cat Butt" and it was automatically rejected. Sads.

I gave one a potentially objectionable name, but it was not rejected. Go figure.

Answering my own question partially, by downloading the data it's sorted by total confidence which somewhat correlates to vote count. Should have been able to guess what people would gravitate to without the spreadsheet.
Some examples:
Unsurprising: #000000 #ffffff #ff0000
Numerology: #123456 #666666
Aren't we funny: #696969 #420420

I proposed Centennial Snot Green because of the local college's ill-advised colour ident.

I sat there for a long time, naming color after color. I didn't vote for any, maybe I should do this differently. Glurple Rain. No, Insidious Pink, or Pink Pink You Stink.

Ugh I made a typo trying to name Kidney pink and could find no way to correct it or submit another name so now I'm just getting crucified in the votes.

My first attempt I got a deep blue color. Thought a second... And figured I'd Christen it "selfish blue".

In response, the site told me that name already exists. Ha!

Now I really want to see what "selfish blue" looks like.
posted by Theophrastus Johnson at 11:32 AM on April 10, 2020

Aha, I can search by name.

That's not a selfish blue!
posted by Theophrastus Johnson at 11:34 AM on April 10, 2020

I named hundreds of colors over there. We'll see if they stick. That is fun, searching your personal data base for impressions of deep blues, provocative pinks, greens that bust out of the screen.

"Color of the Beast", surely?

Baige is covered. So is Gay, but it's not the top choice for that color. (Nor do I think there's anything gay about that color.) WTF and Dunno both have multiple options with no similarity. Penis is not found, which leads me to think they're censoring the names.

Other XKCD Color Survey results:
Dusty Teal has several options; I prefer 7ca8a4.
Blush Pink, as you might expect, has a LOT of options. I think the name should go to f6b2cd.
Dusty Lavender has a clear frontrunner: d9c9fe. I agree.
Butter Yellow doesn't have the same consensus, and while the frontrunner fafcb6 seems more correct to me than the other options, I'm not sure any of the existing uses strike me as "correct."
Dusky Rose has one with an advantage, but since I think it's wrong, I'll link to the obviously more accurate ac6d78.

I did Early Girl after a tomato variety and fish city because someone in my house said those words just as I looked at the color.

The 'browser-safe' background color I used in my past blog designs I have christened "foop".

Year + AD/CE/BC could be pretty fruitful.

I added "What Would Jesus Blue" to 0000AD but apparently it's being held up by the moderation team.

2020CE is Pandemic Blue.

I went through and tried to suggest alternatives for all the colors suffering the indignity of being named "your mom" and now I have entirely too strong opinions about a number of shades.

(The naming of hues is a difficult matter, it isn't just one of your holiday games, etc)

At the moment, MetaFilter Blue is at 105 votes, in second place behind the all-time leader Alphabet Blue at 115. (See ShooBoo's list above.) We can do this, people.
