it's just wood, and paint, and damage

Julian Baumgartner of Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration's newest video is a departure from his usual fare, featuring a sculpture by Ida Kohlmeyer. 23 minutes of relaxing zen stuff. posted by lazaruslong (9 comments total) 10 users marked this as a favorite

This is very cool. I wonder what the silicone strap clamp stuff is. Is it basically the same thing as Hugo's Amazing Tape?

I love this guy. It's all so satisfying to watch.

He gives great facebook, if you're so inclined.

Should be noted too that he ran a fundraising campaign thru his social media that raised something like $65,000 - that was immediately put to use buying masks that are being delivered to hospitals.

The combination of satisfying video + soothing vocals = **chef's kiss**

I had a professor who did restoration work for the Getty Museum. It was fascinating to watch but the slow, delicate and minute tedium of the work drove me nuts. Immediately knew I could never do it. Even unwrapping a Hersey's Kiss tries my patience...

I love his videos. I do work with a conservator and get to watch a lot of things worked on in real time and it's just as magical - actually more, as you see a tiny paint dot perfectly match its surroundings and disguise a minuscule bit of damage. The conservator is aware of the Baumgartner fandom and is a bit bewildered by it.

I'm trying to decide if I would find it deadly dull, or a zen practice that I deeply enjoyed. I think if I did start disliking it, it would be because so many of these are Bible subjects. There's only so many Jesus pictures I would want to look at.

I took a conservation and restoration class in university. Everyone else got ceramic pots and plates, but for some reason the professor assigned me this insanely creepy mask. I can still close my eyes and see the finished product; truly haunting stuff. Which I guess I can count as a success???

In my particular instance it was removing the deteriorating wood from behind a Hellenistic Egyptian encaustic funerary portrait from one or two hundred years BCE. Definitely pre-Christian era...
