The deep irony of The Time is that they broke up / were broken up right before Purple Rain came out and made them international superstars.

You... you old, Michelin Man, fat, black...

Good lord did I need this today. Thank you so much.

(When they started to build casinos here, I kept talking about being excited about a new level of band appearances... someone said "who, like The Time?" YES EXACTLY THAT. They were here last year and it was amazing.)

And the Letterman clip - Dave just didn't quite seem to get Morris - he tried, but Morris' persona was kind of impenetrable. Dang, Morris was great.

davidmsc: "but Morris' persona was kind of impenetrable."

He's got it all under control.

I saw Morris Day and The Time in Austin, TX in the late 90s. Hands down the smoothest mofos I've ever seen on stage. The band was super tight, Jerome was on his A-Game as Morris' personal assistant, and Mr. Day did a 5+ minute bit with some Ladies in the audience about having a menage a trois. The only band that I've ever seen that out-funked them was the P-Funk reunion in 1999.

Or maybe The Meters.

And the Letterman clip

I think that Letterman was out of his depth with Day, but also Day was out of his depth with being on a national talk show suddenly way more famous than he'd ever expected. And having to be "Morris Day from The Time" while conducting an interview when usually "Morris Day" is a highly choreographed persona on a stage... I can see where both of them weren't quite connecting.

Letterman could have played a bit more into Day's egotism rather than trying to "understand" him or whatever. And Day could have tried to meet Letterman halfway with his awkward white guy questioning.

But the interview is amazing regardless.

Here's an hour-long interview with Day that is sort of the Marc Maron "tell your story" format. It's from earlier this year, and it's a pretty good interview. It's also not "Morris Day" but rather Morris Day doing the interview.

Without yet watching the video, the bass line from Jungle Love is grooving through my skull. This is a good thing.
