You're watching the ABC... in meltdown

Perhaps the strain of maintaining the nation's COVID-19 liveblog got too much for the Australian national broadcaster today, as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's local Facebook pages went to war... with themselves [slFB, very silly]

very dumb, but it made me smile

Am I missing something? A rolling news blog and a map of Australia with a red line around part of it followed by some dead dolphins?

It's in the comments, with funny responses by the various other ABC local accounts, particularly the ones left out of the "bubble." I can't figure out how to link to just a response, but ABC Hobart is showing up first for me, with "Well well well ... our Christmas card list is now a little smaller 🤭" and a list of ABC [City] accounts, with ABC Darwin marked out. They made me laugh, and yes, I can identify with the lockdown making everyone a little loopy.

I think you'd have to have an extensive multi-platform beloved national public broadcaster with strong state entities to really get this joke.

I clicked the link, logged into Facebook, looked at the comments, and saw lots of comments saying "look at the comments", with a "view more comments" link. Clicking that link loads 50 more comments, most of which also say "look at the comments". There's 26,000 comments total.

But, the rule has always been "Don't read the comments!"

This tweet has screenshots of the most relevant comments.

Australians have a strong state identity, which is mostly expressed as antipathy towards anyone from any other state. Melburnians are latte-sipping wankers, Sydneysiders are stuck-up wankers, Brisbanites are hicks, Adelaidians are deeply boring, Perthlings are irrelevant and no-one cares about Tasweigians.

This is one of those reasons I love Metafilter - this is something I'd never have encountered, and it was so much fun (I especially loved this one, though, because deep down I am 8 years old)

The response from ABC Australia saying "Don't drag me into it" is the most perfect "cut it out kids mum is too tired to deal with this" comment ever

There's a short summary at Junkee: Please Enjoy The ABC Pages Beefing With Each Other On Facebook. FYI Clive refers to Clive Palmer, one of Australia's most egregiously politically interfering billionaires- similar to Trump/and or the Koch Brothers.
