When Kari Barba was forced to close her two tattoo shops in California last week due to COVID-19, she asked the 20 artists who work for her how long the meager savings in their bank accounts would last them. They all told her the same thing: about a month. After that, she has no idea how they'll survive....
Almost every tattoo artist in America is an independent contractor. In exchange for space in a shop or private studio, they pay 30 to 50 percent of what they make on each tattoo to the parlor. They don't have 401(k)s. Many don't have health insurance. Under current federal law, they're not eligible for unemployment.
You have no idea how they'll survive because you were operating like Uber.

Honest question: Tattoo parlors existed before the Ubers came about, so what changed in the business model?

AFAIK this is how tattoo shops and salons have always operated. Uber didn't invent this model.

Oh please, don't speak to what you don't know about. The problem is our abysmal social safety net, not Big Tattoo Shop.

Most hair stylists, spas, masseuse places, nail salons, etc. all work under the same principle and have for as long as I've been having my hair done professionally, which is about the Reagan administration.
