Paper Mario: The Origami King [Announcement Trailer] [Gameplay] “Nintendo announced a new Paper Mario game coming to Switch July 17 called Paper Mario: The Origami King. It’ll be the sixth game in the series and the first on the new console. The story looks like it’ll revolve around trying to liberate Princess Peach’s castle from a new paper-based menace called King Olly, who, according to Nintendo’s press release, wants to “fold the entire world.” Exploration will be based on a new ability called “1000-Fold Arms” in which Mario extends his appendages in weird ways to solve puzzles and navigate environments. It sounds like you’ll be able to team up with a few allies at various points as well, including Bowser.” [via: Kotaku]

However the game itself turns out, that trailer was incredible.

This is a pretty odd series. The first two games share a lot of DNA with the turn-based Super Mario RPG. The third is a 2d/3d puzzle platformer type of thing. The 4th and 5th have consumable sticker/card based battle mechanics. The gameplay in the 3rd-5th games has generally been received less positively than the first two.

From the gameplay footage, looks like another big change.

Love the creativity and production values on display in the story trailer, I'll be curious to see if it's any fun. The Switch is a lovely console but in terms of 1st party games that feel really different than what was on the Wii U has a bit of room for improvement.

Indeed, it's one thing I've been hearing from a lot of the gaming podcasts I listen to: this looks fun but I'll wait to see how the gameplay actually pans out. Cautiously optimistic is how I am looking at this latest entry in the series.

Despite really enjoying Super Mario RPG back when, I have never been able to get into any of the Paper Mario games. Not that I could play this anyway, given that it would require paying for a Switch.

Despite really enjoying Super Mario RPG back when,

I've given up hope on Nintendo giving us a sequel to RPG or even a HD remake. That being said, if you're looking for something similar, give the Mario & Luigi series a chance: Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team are both amazing 3DS games that are very RPG heavy in how you battle and progress.

I enjoy these side-line series/experiments as this is where Nintendo gets to be really weird with Mario. I mean, I never thought that Mario and Rabbids would be a thing but that's one of the most entertaining turn-based strategy games of this generation.

I've been playing some old GBA games during the pandemic downtime, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga was a blast. Very fun and whimsical – at one point you battle through a question block factory that has examples of question blocks from different Mario games – and some of the best pixel art I've ever seen.

Yeah, those first two Mario & Luigi games are really great with lots of clever mechanics, although the timing aspects to the combat feel closer to the first two Paper Mario games than Super Mario RPG. haven't tried the later 3DS versions.

The third is a 2d/3d puzzle platformer type of thing.

The third one was billed as Super Paper Mario, so an offshoot from the regular Paper Mario games. I liked it a lot but only played part of it before getting distracted by something else. Still on my list to get back to someday.

I had Paper Mario for the GameCube and it was one of my favorites. This looks amazing!

King Olly, who, according to Nintendo’s press release, wants to “fold the entire world.

I can’t blame him, although I expect he folds at the first setback.

Mario and Rabbids shouldn't work, but it's a lot of fun. There's a really great piece by Jake Solomon (director of the XCOM games) about his reaction to first seeing it.

I've played through it twice, for whatever reason. A solid b-tier game with a bit of drag from the story sequences. It's cool that you get to use Peach and Bowser for some of the side-scrolling stuff.

Spoilers, I guess. Nerr!

Paper Mario for the GameCube was my jam as well. I played it through when I was in grad school and the music at the beginning of this trailer took me right back there. I’m excited for this!
