Pierre Imans was a French mannequin manufacturer in the 1920´s.
Les Cires de Pierre Imans were disturbingly lifelike and gender-bending.
Here is a further selection.

Thanks to Doctor Who I hate all mannequins now and forever.

Imans mannequins were hell of freaky. These are cool links and I totally can't handle them without shivering and sweating. It's like the uncanny valley of the past.

You'd think I could muster the courage to handle a Kim Cattral mannequin, but not even Woolworths can make me feel safe.

Mannequins can be so creepy sometimes. And, I'm always reminded of a particular Twilight Zone episode, that seriously creeped me out as a kid, whenever the topic comes up.

I was working in the marketing department of a large regional department store chain in early 80's, when a huge wave of change swept through the industry, outraging the old guard and many shoppers as well...The new lines of female mannequins now had nipples!

Dear god. Won't they think of the children??

Facial expressions are a sales technique

My five year old friend and I were always commenting on the headless children mannequins in the window of a Gap Kids store. One day they were gone. I asked him where they went. He said they went looking for their heads.

He noticed and remarked about the mannequins without faces we saw in another store before this time.

I thought the point was to have little or no facial features so the customer could see themselves dressed that way. These mannequins are way over the top in the other direction.

Some of the male heads are exactly what I imagined the wax head in “Herbert West - Reanimator” looking like.

I used to have two fiberglass mannequins, but they didn’t survive an extended period of storage in a relative’s damp barn. I still have the head from the child mannequin somewhere. It has rooted lashes and eyes that look like they could be glass.

Some of these are a little creepy/grotesque but most are extraordinarily sculptural/painterly, at least in the photos. Perhaps in person I'd feel different.

I was also taken by this photograph of Imans captured by none other than Robert Doisneau, the photographer most famous for Kiss by the Hotel de Ville
