Pup 696
June 8, 2020 10:43 AM   Subscribe

In this series of videos from the Monterey Bay Aquarium, orphaned Sea Otter Pup 696 is rescued, learns to drink from a bottle, has his fur fluffed and brushed, learns to swim, gets strong, chews on toys and gets an otter foster mom for sea-life survival skills.

He also makes many adorable squeaking noises throughout the process.

If you want five hours of grown sea otters chilling in their exhibit they also have you covered.

OMG this is so entirely charming and I didn't know I needed this today but apparently I did and I demand that OtterFilter be all that MetaFilter ever is ever.

I enjoyed this, too. I gasped out loud when I saw how big his feet had gotten in the "starting solid food" video. i think him meeting the foster mom was my favorite. In my next life, I want to be an otter who is foster mom to a series of rescued pups at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

In the learning to swim video, he does a little shimmy at around 40 seconds and I AM DEAD. I HAVE DIED OF CUTE. TERMINAL CUTENESS HAS BEEN ACHIEVED.

thank you. the usual serving of horror these days has been augmented by private losses lately, so I really appreciate such sweet wholesome cuteness!

But you have to be masked the whole time so that they can never know you!

May I also present Pup 719, who is being raised at the Shedd Aquarium with no otter foster mom available, so will be acclimated to humans and must stay there permanently. THAT MEANS CUDDLES. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htiRri_2N48

I have the otter feeds and otter account hookups, I can make OtterFilter a thing. There's enough updates between Aty, Bingo & Belle, Kotaro & Hana, all the aquariums & zoos...

I was not prepared for how tiny he was at rescue! I saw the medium sized dog kennel, but when the lil guy was in the net he was just so little!!!

I once rescued and bottle-fed a kitten for like 8 weeks (which involves a lot more than just holding a bottle) and when you first start they are SO TINY AND SO HELPLESS. Blind and guided only by sound, and I had to buy a wind-up clock so they'd have a heartbeat to listen to and man, that was one of the most amazing things to do in my life.

I didn't have to fluff its fur for buoyancy and warmth, however.
