Jacobin called Riley's 2018 film Sorry to Bother You "one of the best anticapitalist films in recent memory" and a rare Hollywood film to depict labor struggles. In an interview with Democracy Now, Riley described wanting to create a film that showed "a sense of optimism, that although things are messed up and all these things are going on, if there’s a fight with a clear way to win."
Noname, who last year announced that she would quit rapping for predominantly white audiences, started her Book Club in the tradition of Black-owned bookstores of the 60s through the 80s meant to be safe spaces "for Black thought leaders, feminists, queer activists, and anyone else looking to understand, talk about or change the Black experience."
