I spent about two weeks in Algeria a little over a year ago. It was an incredible place, and a wonderful experience. I can't wait to dig into all this, thanks.

A place I’ve always dreamed of going. Especially the territories deep in the Sahara.

Related to which, here’s some incredible music of the Ouled Naïl, recorded in 1973.

In that first film from 1896, there is a non horse drawn street car. Does anyone have any info on this? Looks like I may need to do my research thing. Thanks for this awesome post!

Direct link to the tram.

I suspect that the date for the film may be slightly off, and we’re looking at Algiers’ new electric tramway, inaugurated 1898. (CW: some racism)

Still, electric tramway 1898 is pretty amazing!

It does seem pretty well attested that the Lumière Brothers footage is from 1896, though. A mystery!

OK, mystery solved. There are 33 Lumière films of Algeria. While the earlier footage is from 1896, some is from their second visit in 1903, including the footage of the tram, Départ de la place du Gouvernement à Alger.
