In response to recent events such as the dismissal of James Bennet from the New York Times and backlash over transphobic statements from celebrities like JK Rowling, Harper's Magazine has published a letter extolling the virtues of public debate of ideas, arguing that hate should be combatted with words.(SLHarper's)

Okay, the OP was me being as neutral as I can. This is my actual position:

This letter is a load of bullshit, and everyone who signed their names to it should be ashamed.

People should not have to argue for their humanity out of some deluded notion of "free speech", nor should bigots be treated as being something else because they got the first word (a position known as the "preferred first speaker".) The "principle of charity" should not be held to when it is clear that hate is driving speech, and we need to not give bigots succor.
